How to see in magical darkness...

Advice

This is sort of a sister thread to my other one I started a couple hours ago.

What are the ways to see in magical darkness (deeper darkness to be exact). This is for a drow, if that matters.

The lower level the better, and if it doesn't require an item, that's even better. I just hate making a character/NPC whose main tactics are based around having the right item.

So, let's list the ways! Hopefully, this thread can double as one that will help future players find a way to do this too.

Everburning torch made at just the sufficient level.
Lantern archons.

Are you wanting to see in deeper darkness without dispelling/countering it? If so, there are VERY limited options. A few races have options to do so. The spell echolocation lets you "see" in a limited range but the spell is personal so you have to either a)cast it yourself, b)use a wand, or c)use a scroll. You can't use the scroll if you're already in the darkness (can't see it) and the wand is very expensive.

A Rod of Shadows will give you the see in darkness universal monster ability while you are wielding it. It costs over 64000 gp

Now if you want to counter deeper darkness, daylight is the easiest option. Available in handy oil of... form. A heightened continual flame will also do the job.

Not counter it, see in it. There are drow feats to eventually be able to cast deeper darkness at will, but it's useless if I can't see in it. Stupid paizo, why can't I see in my own spell?!

Liberty's Edge

8th level clerics with the darkness domain.

Also 11th level oracle with the dark tapestry mystery can.

I was hoping to make this guy an alchemist, but apparently this won't work.

Is there a way to look through the eyes of a familiar.

If so, look through the eyes of an imp with See in Darkness....

With a lenient GM or a drow-blooded tiefling, Fiend Sight does this when taken twice.

You could try this ranger archetype, although trying a drow ranger may get you ostracized.

Nightskin lets you do that, but it's a bit pricey and not terribly useful else.

This rod is pricier, but doesn't take up a slot.

Divine Vessel can be used for its fiendish aspect, but it's an 8th level spell.

Do you actually need to see or would Blind Fight be sufficient?

The plan was for an alchemist, so there's a good chance at least some ranged capability will be required.

Theres a spell, I think in 3.5, Deeper Darkvision, if I recall correctly its not incredibly high level so if you'd be willing to let it into your game you could maybe have a wand? Best I can do

I was thinking he would be a preservationist vivesectionist. So no ranged.

But is there any way to see through a familiar's eyes? If there is, I've solved the problem.

Unfortunately not, "Empathic Link (Su): The master has an empathic link with his familiar to a 1 mile distance. The master can communicate empathically with the familiar, but cannot see through its eyes. Because of the link's limited nature, only general emotions can be shared. The master has the same connection to an item or place that his familiar does."

Presumably because it is a very powerful ability, you might also want to consider how much fun it will be for other players or even the GM to be in darkness a considerable number of encounters.

For an alchemist this is quite possible at 10th level. Echolocation is a 4th level alchemist extract. It gives you blindsight to a range of 40'.

But as others have said, consider how this will affect your party. We've had several people show up to play PFS with a wand of obscuring mist and some variation on the fog sight ability gloating about how they now have total concealment from enemies. All it takes is one or two fights where they realize none of their party is willing to get in the mist either (making it a one vs. everybody fight) to realize they have not made an optimal choice
