So my friends and I sat down and played for the first time this past weekend and had a blast, although I think my friends had me playing Merisiel wrong the whole time. Basically, anytime I went up against a monster, they had me roll using dexterity because "you're a rogue. Of course you use dexterity". Afterwards, I started reading more about the game and combat checks, and if I'm understanding correctly, any time combat is done without using any cards you always do a strength check. However, if I was to use something like the dagger card, I could reveal it and use dexterity instead, correct?
Same for my friend who was playing the sorcerer. He always did an intelligence check because "he's a sorcerer". But he can only do an intelligence check if he has a card saying he could, correct? Otherwise, even he would have to roll strength?

You always do what the card says. The default attack in the game is a punch to the face so it is a Strength or Melee attack. Once you play any card that says "For your combat check...", that changes (potentially) what dice you use plus gives you additional dice. So, no, you don't always get to roll a D12 or D10 for your attack.

You are correct. Your friends...not so much. They are interpreting based on RPG-knowledge, which is not really a good idea. It has led to loads of erroneous conclusions in the several months since this game went live. Refer to the second item here with the ALL CAPS heading to see how this was addressed.
Welcome to the game! It's a ton of fun!
