Witch vs Medusa

The witch wants to cast slumber on the medusa.

Both slumber and the medusa's gaze have a range of 30.

Am I right in saying that the witch cannot avoid having to make a save vs petrification prior to her slumber going off?

Each opponent within range of a gaze attack must attempt a saving throw each round at the beginning of his or her turn in the initiative order.

Technically, the witch could start 35 feet away, move into range, and use the slumber hex. Since the witch was not in range of the gaze at the beginning of her turn, she would not be subject to the gaze.

Agreed.

If the medusa had readied a gaze attack, that would come first. And of course, if the slumber fails, the witch would have to avert gaze (50%) or close eyes to avoid it the next round.

Thanks.

I guess that also means that someone on a mount using ride-by-attack that begins and ends outside of 30' can attack without worrying about gaze either.

Incidentally, wow would averting gaze work in terms of the witch's slumber hex? Would she only have a 50% chance of being able to target the medusa?

Richard

The medusa would have concealment against the witch. The witch would have a 20% miss chance with attacks. Since the slumber hex requires no attack roll, then it should work fine. (Similarly, magic missile.)

If the witch blindfolded herself, the medusa would have total concealment from her, and the witch could not use the slumber hex on the medusa because she lacks line of sight. (Note: This last point is debatable, as the rule prohibiting a caster from targeting creatures she can't see is a rule for spells, and the slumber hex is not a spell.)

Odd, we had this kind of situation a while back. Medusa vs Blind fight.
