Can you use the item crafting rules to reduce the cost of making scrolls and potions?

Homebrew and House Rules

Using the rules for magic item creation you can get a 30% discount on crafting an item if you attune it to a class or alignment.

So using these rules would it be possible to make a scroll that is limited to just wizards and thus make it 30% cheaper?

First off, those are guidelines, not rules. DMs should make all crafting-related determinations for their games.

Any answer to your question is therefore a house rule and doesn't really belong in the Rules Questions forum. You should direct your question to your DM.

My Ruling:
I'd say no way. The discount guideline is NOT meant as a way to make your money go farther.

In short, if the restriction you're imposing doesn't actually restrict, it isn't intended to reduce crafting costs. Since this doesn't really mesh with the RAW, there's good odds that the passage will be removed from the text at some point.

At the least, the restriction might affect the crafter's ability to sell the thing.

I assume this question is serious. No. Rules-wise, the scrolls already have that restriction. And potions are ment to be consumables.

You will also be bombarded by other posters about the cheesiness of your suggestion

The 30% discount should not be used to "attune" an item to game more gold. However, if the item inherently restricts itself to a class then it should apply.

Well, that was an interesting thread move.

Huh I didn't even realize you could move to a different thread...

Anyway I was just asking because I was looking for rules to houserule. In this case, I think I will forbid any item price reduction.

Silver Crusade

I am in the minority. I have ruled yes before and would again.
30% cheeper gold cost for +5 UMD check penalty.

Also note I require the sacrifice of XP of 1/25GP to make any magic items in my campaigns. ie 3.x crafting.

I allow the three feats from Eberron that reduce gold/time/xp to make magic items. I take the 25% off for the feat first, then have them apply the 30% GP reduction to that new total (I do not combine it to 55% GP reduction) XP create cost does not get reduce by this restriction additional gp reduction.
