Hero Lab Pathfinder licenses

Product Discussion

I tried asking this on the Lone Wolf forums but for some reason their forums aren't loading for me.

As I understand it, if you buy Hero Lab you get two licenses. What happens with the Pathfinder licenses? Say I bought the Classic Pack, does that give me two licenses to use on the same computers I used for the initial Hero Lab purchase? Or would I need to buy two separate licenses?

As a Herolab user, the way it has worked for me is you get the license per system; a License for Pathfinder. This initial license allows you to use the PF packs on *two* separate computers. You can also buy additional licenses in order to use PF packs on up to two more (total of four) computers. Also, I think the licenses/computers are affiliated through your MAC address. You can change the machine your license is working on, but only every 120days. If you want to change a computer sooner, you have to contact WolfLair and have them manually update it :)

Hope it helps.

MAC address? So the two computers have to be on the same network? That kinda defeats the point I'd want a second license for as I'd want one for the desktop and another for the laptop.

If it's done by MAC address, then nope, they don't have to be on the same network. It just uses the unique ID of the network hardware in the computer to identify it for licensing.

I'm not sure exactly how they handle the license, but I can tell you I have one license on my PC and another on my laptop, and it works fine, whether my laptop is on my home network or not.

And that's from a single purchase of Hero Lab and additional Pathfinder add-ons?

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Here's how it works:

Buying Hero Lab gives you a license for one game system. You can also obtain an additional license to that game system for another computer at no cost. It is also possible to buy up to two additional licenses, for more computers.

Each license is tied to the computer you activate it on. All data sets you purchase are available on all of your licensed machines.

The computers do not in any way have to have any direct link or association. I have HL installed on my desktop, my laptop, and my wife's computer. I have taken my laptop all around the country and had no issues with it. That particular license is tied to the machine itself.

You may reassign a license to a different machine once every 120 days. There aren't likely to be too many people who buy a new computer more often than that.

The only thing to be careful of is to use a different license on each machine. Trying to use the same one on two machines causes problems (this is the single most common error that occurs with multiple installs). When you request the additional license for your laptop from LWD (and you have to request it, which you can do within Hero Lab), take care to use the new license that they send you on the laptop. For best results, have your desktop and laptop next to you when you try to activate the second license: check that the two are different. You will only need to do this once, if you remember to save the license details on the machine.

That should be everything you need to do to make it work.

Cool, thanks, that makes a bit more sense.

The MAC address is part of the machine, not part of the network. So if you take the machine to another network you can still use it.

I doubt they use the Mac address because computers can and often do have more than one Mac address. A lot of the new Ultra books do not even have an Ethernet port built in. The Asus Zen books for example use a USB adapter that can be used in another computer. This would also mean if you replace the network card the software does not work.

you have 2 free licences (to install on 2 computers )
you can buy one additional for 10$ for a 3rd computer
those 2-3 installations will include all the packages you purchased in addition to the core system

note that you do not need to be connected to the net to run HeroLab

should you want to never connect your pc to the net, there is a procedure to validate using a file coming from another computer

As above Chemlak is completely correct. You get one game system. Be it Pathfinder, 4E, Savage Worlds and or something else. With the purchase of Hero Lab you get two licenses (different from the game system) to apply to two different computer systems. Once you have chosen a game system though and want another game system, you have to purchase another at the same cost of $29.99. Each additional licenses to use on a different computer system (up to two more from the original two) costs $10.00 for a total of 4 licenses (the original two and two additional ones).

So if you want the Pathfinder RPG game system for Hero Lab it would cost $29.99 (which comes with two licenses) and you want to put Hero lab on a third computer thus needing to purchase a third license will cost $10.00 more and a fourth another $10.00 for a total of $49.99. If you ever buy any add-ons for Pathfinder, then those ALL will appear on any licensed computer with the Pathfinder game system on it.

In addition to one additional for $10 for a 3rd computer, you can purchase a second additional license, also for $10 for a 4th computer.

A correction; purchasing another game system in addition to the choice of game system you get while installing Hero Lab costs $20, not $29.99.

Thanks Mathias, I actually did not know that.
