A Darkforce class

Homebrew and House Rules

I'm looking to create a Darkforce class and could use some help.

While its possible a very shadow magic oriented caster could sort of pull it off, I feel as if the Darkforce is way more than mere illusion, even if sometimes those tend to be real.

I also don't think it should rely on the Plane of Shadow, but some sort of in-between plane, perhaps of Shadow and Negative energy.

Ideally, I would like this to be a base class, but a PrC could work as well.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

You could do worse than check out the Umbral Weaver Bard archetype.

There was another thread here in S/HR/Homebrew trying to create a Shadows-as-weapons-user. I'll try to find it and link it...

- Or check out the Shadowsworn Base class in Kobold Press' Players Guide to the Crossroads - had several shadow/darkness themed spells as well as some nifty shadow abilities...

I know that isn't exactly all that Darkforce can do, nor exactly what you are looking for but it's a good place to start with mechanics for the shadows.

The intangibility stuff can come later perhaps...

Looking at the wikia you linked, the Darkforce user could

* eat light - essentially gain HP by extinguishing mundane light (I successfully submitted a spell to Kobold Press Deep Magic that did this)

* eat warmth and leave victims cold in the same way - gaining HP's

* create a wall of dark-force as a shield

* scare or Intimidate with dark-force energy

* bestow fatigue as the condition

I would be inclined to use a Darkforce Pool like a magus, but I can see the attraction of something much simpler...

So, a 3/4 BAB and d8 HD seems the most likely option. You could give it magus casting and spells known.

You could even tweak the Arcana to be Darkforce powers....

Looks pretty interesting. Leaving a dot here.

Here's the link to the Shadowlord Homebrew class

There is also a Shadow Mage thread, I'll get it in a second...[hurries off to search forum]

[returns, quick as a shadow]

Shadow Mage

Both of these are incomplete, but might be useful to mine for ideas....

If you Search "shadow" in Suggestions/House Rules/Homebrew by Relevance, you'll get all manner of Shadow Witches, effects, classes etc....

Thanks Ocean. Glad I'm getting me a hard copy of Deep Magic :-).

Few other uses include teleportation, of self and others, both as a weapon or as a normal means of transportation.

Also, massive blankets of darkness, town and city wide, along with blasts of energy.

Creation of objects, though I am unsure of their duration.

I'm slowly working my way through each entry to gain a better understanding of what Darkforce is, and what one can do with it.

We have a shadowknight base class in War Jornal II who manipulates shadows like that And we actually just did a "Darkborn" class in our Tome of Twisted Things who lets wickedness into their heart in order to fight evil.

Then again, I am going to say you should look at shadow dancer. It fits the bill.

Might be able to mimic some of this with a dread...

Shadow Dancer, the PrC? Not even sort of close. A Shadowcaster Wizard, with the Shadow subschool is kinda better, but even that's a pale(ha!) comparison, that doesn't really pull off most of the stuff a Darkforce wielder can.

shadowknight not shadowdancer. Shadowknight is a base class built around manipulating shadows. The darkborn is the prc, and it *can* advance spellcasting at the same rate as arcane archer, although it doesn't have as many darkness manipulation abilities. More anti demon/devil stuff.

Oh, well he said Shadowdancer at the end there. Just going with what was written.

actually if you trade out summon shadow for dimension door and the feats, and drop its bab a step to grant it the ability to inflict fear on enemies DD'd, you got a pretty reasonable cloak.

True, but if you follow the link I posted in the OP, you'll see Cloak is only one of many characters who uses the Darkforce.

I'm trying to create or find something that lends itself to as many of the uses as possible.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Huge fan of cloak and dagger. Dotting.
