Familiar Body Type and Elementals

For purposes of the chart in animal archives of magical item slots for animal companions and familiars, what body shapes are the different elementals? Or do you get to pick a shape when you get your improved familiar elemental or Stone Lord Stone elemental companion?

I think most people would say that elementals are vaguely humanoid, and can use any items. I don't think there has been any direct clarification on it, though without it the elemental body line of spells would become much less powerful.

The rules don't say what item slots an elemental has. The monster descriptions indicate that most elementals can be shaped in a wide variety of ways, and many are roughly humanoid in shape, so if they can wear items, it'd probably be the usual slots. Just remember that polymorphing into an elemental merges your gear, so if you want to use any items, you'll have to drop them first, then pick them up after polymorphing.

This (or similar things) was discussed in several threads but non came to any meaningful conclusion.
It is not only relevant for item slots but for proficiency, too. The earth elementals are described as roughly humanoid. Humanoid elementals are proficient with simple weapons. So are earth elementals proficient?
