Improved Familiar.... Arcane Spellcaster Level

So this was on a few different threads.

Please clarify.

For improved familiar you clearly have to have the familiar class ability.
For the chart indicate.

1. Levels in classes that provide arcane casting
so 4 level of Wizard +3 mystic Theurge gets you an 7 on the chart

or

2. Arcane caster level
so 1 wiz + Boon compainion+ Magical Knack gets you a 7. Or SLA and level 7 allows for a 7.

I am really hoping it is number 1.

The familiar only advances in Wizard (or arcane bloodline and such) levels so the Wizard 4 fighter 10 has a familiar as if he was only a level 4.

An example of two arcane spell casting classes and familiar rules:

Wizard 10 Magus 10 = 10 EWLs (effective wizard levels) for familiar (or level 10 on the chart)

Wizard 10 Magus 10 with the familiar arcana = 20 EWL for the familiar.

yeah this was argued on another thread to well, at great length , that caster level in the chart means caster level of any spell you have that is arcane. I posted this mainly to flag it for an FAQ update per the sticky.
