Question about Somatic Component to Cleric Spells

Advice

I play a cleric that has uses a rapier and buckler.

If my cleric draws a rod from his belt (doesn't matter what kind), and still holds his rapier, can he cast a spell with somatic components?

To my knowledge, no. You have to have a free hand to cast and it would seem that both of your hands are occupied.

Agreed. You need at least one free hand to cast a spell with a somatic component. You would need to sheathe the rapier (move-equivalent action) and then draw the metamagic rod (another move-equivalent action), then cast the spell the next round.

Or, drop the rapier as a free action, then draw the rod as a move-equivalent, then cast the spell as a standard action.

I have to wonder, is it feasable to switch the rod to the sword hand as a free action in order to free up the rod hand to cast the spell?

Realistically this makes sense to me, but mechanically it might not?

I see. Thank you.
