Bracers of Avenging or Merciful Knight?

Advice

Liberty's Edge

I've got a tiefling paladin (oath of vengeance) who uses a nodachi, with Fey Foundling, Greater Mercy, and Power Attack feats. He fights 2-handed, and his favored class is spent on the LoH bonus. He wears full plate.

Stats are (without buffs/items):
Str 18, Dex 12, Con 10, Int 11, Wis 10, Cha 17

With that, which would be more beneficial, the Bracers of the Avenging Knight, or Bracers of the Merciful Knight?

Are you finding yourself running out of smites per day, or LOH per day more often? What level are you, and are you interested in the Ultimate Mercy feat?

Merciful all the way. You can convert Lay on Hands to Smite Evil but not the opposite.

I find that I'm using LoH to heal more than I am to smite, but as I get higher in levels, that may end up changing. I stay conservative with smites even though I can convert LoH to smites. I'm always too afraid of not having LoH when needed. In retrospect, going Oath of Vengeance might've been a bad idea, given how conservatively I play.

Currently at level 6. I'm uncertain about what to take as far as feats go, but Ultimate Mercy is definitely in the list of choices, just because of how insanely useful it would be for the party.

Merciful bracers are so good. +2 loh per day, +2d6 (+4 w/ fey foundling) to the amount healed, and 1/day add a lesser restoration to a loh (getting it as a swift or standard action, instead of a 3 round cast). But I also perfer my paladins to favor defense.

Learn to smite often. When you smite you also take a deflection bonus to AC, apart from the fact that you hit more often and much harder. This means that your enemies have fewer rounds to harm you before thay die and even then their chances to overcome your massive AC against them are much slimmer. In few words, the more you smite, the less you heal yourself and the party.

Take a couple of times Extra Lay on Hands before you consider something else. It will make you feel more comfortable smiting more often.

I would definitely go for the Merciful bracers based on what you've told me.

Okay, I was leaning onto the Merciful bracers anyway, so this is good to know :)
