Side track to Kaer Maga


Rise of the Runelords


So, My players did not fair so well at the Fort. 3 of 5 are now dead, as is 1 of the black arrows, and Orik from book 1, who I had go with them as a black arrow recruit. They are heading to Kaer Maga to get them raised, but I want things for them to do there.

I know the city has some connection to the runelords, and I was going to read the City of strangers book about Kaer Maga, but I was wondering if there are any good Modules for Kaer Maga?

That or part of an AP or any suggestions on what would be a fun side adventure, since they are also a little low on where they need to be XP wise.


I bet your players will have a blast in Kaer Maga - it's a great idea!

Three main adventures in the location:
Module: Seven Swords of Sin (most connected to Runelords, written for 3.5 and rather deadly)
Module: The Godsmouth Heresy
AP Volume: The Asylum Stone from Shattered Star AP.

Also might be able to run the scenarios The City of Strangers, or Feast of Sigils, but those would require some adaptation.

There is also the Pathfinder Society Season 4 scenario Feast of Sigils. That one has a direct Thassilonian connection, ableit to a different Runelord.

I actually strung a few published adventures together to make a long side-quest that was effectively another book of Rise of the Runelords that I called "Book 4: Seven Swords of Sin".

Here's my outline of that adventure.

The PCs loved Kaer Maga.

I added one Easter egg in the city for fans of late '70s sword-and-sorcery fiction... the Vulgar Unicorn inn and tavern from the shared-world anthology Thieves' World. A few of the characters of that novel made cameo appearances. (Specifically, One-Thumb the innkeeper, Cappen Vera the bard, and the magus Lythande the Star-Browed.)


Thanks for the suggestions, here is what I am thinking of doing though I will have Horus Ilaktyk be the one who raises them, but he will demand favors in addition to money. He will have them bring him 3 of the Caulborn from beneath the city so he can use them, and have them connect to Asylum stone or Feast of Sigials, though I have to get both of those from a buddy so I can read and use them. Then lead them into 7 sword, although maybe shortened or toned down.

I could also change that order depending on if Asylum stone or Feast of Sigials goes down to where the Caulborn are.

Meanwhile they can attempt to recruit some new black arrows, and take the Fort back again, since due to one of my characters backstory, a party of Orcs now holds the fort, though there are only 4 of them.

I fully support this thread!

And Asylum Stone deals with the Caulborn a little bit, but not a ton--probably just enough to tie in well with the sort of thing you're thinking about doing. :)


Not going to lie, I think it is pretty sweet that an editor agrees with what I am doing.
