Only Sorcerer's Full Round a Metamagic Rod Spell

Rules Questions

This has come up (as a side track) on a different thread, but it is important enough to my mind for its own query.

The rule book apparently says that Sorcerers who use metamagic rods get their spell cast time increased - but not any other spontaneous casting (such as oracles, clerics and cures, druid and summons, hedge witches and cures, bards, etc.)

Is there a rule out the that expanded it from sorcerers - or is it that it seemed 'obvious' to many GMs and it has been applied to all?

'A sorcerer still must take a full-round action when using a metamagic rod, just as if using a metamagic feat he possesses (except for quicken metamagic rods, which can be used as a swift action).'

That text can be considered a reminder of the basic rules for spontaneous casters applying metamagic feats to their spells, which apply to all spontaneous casters.

I agree that the text shouldn't single out sorcerers (other than as an example), and should be updated to reflect that.

Sorcerers are more likely to use metamagic rods than any other type of spontaneous caster so it's not surprising that the text tends to reference them more. The general rule for spontaneous casters and metamagic rods, however has not been changed.

Do you have a citation for metamagic rods and spontanteous casters, other than the Sorcerer-specific text posted above?

Casting a standard action metamagic spell spontaneously is a full-round action, and a spell with a longer casting time takes an extra full-round action to cast. The only exception is for spells modified by the Quicken Spell feat, which can be cast as a swift action.

@LazarX, I see clerics apply Metamagic Reach to spontaneously cast curatives all the time.

I originally thought the rods only increased the casting time for sorcerers as well, so when my Life Oracle tried to "reach" a cure spell as a standard action and I was told I couldn't I was quite frustrated. I wouldn't have spent that much money on a rod if I had known.

Another notch in my favor for prepared spellcasters.
