Command Undead (feat): Closest First?

Rules Questions

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Back in 3.5 Turn/Rebuke Undead hit the closest undead first and then each undead progressively farther away.

In Pathfinder I cannot find a similar clause for Command Undead (the Channel Negative Energy feat).

Example:
There is one 4 HD Zombie and three 1 HD Skeletons.
All creatures fail their saves.
The Cleric can control 5 HD.
The Skeletons are closer to the Cleric than the Zombie.

Who is controlled? Cleric choice or closest first?

Assuming there isn't an answer out there I missed, please FAQ.

IIRC there is a clause somewhere in the many controlling undead spells, feats, class features that says that you choose which undead are no longer under your command when you get over your control limit.

I take this as meaning that you get to choose which undead you command as long as their HDs are below your control limit.

Also it is simpler to handle it this way.

While I am probably going to run it that way also I don't think it is that clear. Strictly speaking, you cannot choose to release undead you have not yet acquired. Nor can you acquire all of the available undead since that puts you over your limit.

Ultimately I am posting this for a possible FAQ, I don't need this for my own game. :)

Or we can see it as "you get to control all undead that fail their saves but you immediately must choose which ones you keep since the HDs of those who failed their saves exceeds your control limit." Which is actually in keeping with the order of sentences in the RAW description of the feat (save then control then limit).

Well, if not enough people have this issue then you are probably right. I haven't ever taken a close look at Command Undead before because I typically do not GM for or play (with) necromancers but having taken a closer look I noticed the lack of targeting information in this particular case.
