mid level npc adept advice

For my game I'm making a 8th level adept as the towns mysterious aged holyman for the pc's to interact with and who will help defend the town when it is attacked. What feats would be best for a npc adept both storywise and combat wise? Back story is he tried to be a adventurer but couldn't cut it, but found he wanted to make a pilgrimage around the world and ended up settling in this backwater town as his age became to great to continue traveling and his heart told him this is where he should be. He's had to defend himself but is also not entirely violence oriented. Any help is appreciated.


Improved Familiar (Celestial Hawk or Arbiter Inevitable), Combat Casting, Improved Counter Spell, Evolved Familiar (Basic Magic - Light). You could always say you used the rules presented in UC to rebuild the character to replace unwanted feats.

These are great ideas. I think I might end up using these. I didn't even think about the familiar feats. Thank you
