I've wanted to play a mystic theurge since they first appeared in 3.0, but this is the first time I think I have found one that can keep the power level relevant. My goal is to build a combination god wizard, batman, save or suck. I am in a group that tends towards mega power gaming, borderline munckining. Because of that I am looking for any advice to give this dude an extra little pop.
The control part, I think, is just clever use of barrier spells. The batman / utility should come from the megaton of spells I will have by trading one level of wizard spells for 11 levels of cleric spells. The save or suck should come from optimizing int as a caster stat and grabbing a few feats to bolster save dc.
We were allowed 18 points to build a character. I picked Peri-blooded Aasimar with Spark of Life alternate trait so I can start at middle aged for (non dispelled) stats of:
Str: 7
Dex: 14
Con: 14
Int: 20
Wis: 14
Cha: 10
traits: magical knack (cleric), reactionary
Familiar will be compsognathus until level 8, then imp
level 1 skills:
Knowledge, Dungeoneering (9)
Knowledge, Religion (9)
Knowledge, Arcana (9)
Knowledge, History (11)
Knowledge, The Planes (12)
Perception (6)
Spell Craft (9)
Possibly picking up the following as int goes up:
use magic device
knowledge, nature
linguistics
fly
-other suggestions?
Feats:
w scribe scroll
1 spell focus: conj
3 impr init
5 impr fam (till 18)
7 leadership
9 rime spell
11 spell focus: evo
13 improv spell pen
15 greater spell focus con
16 greater spell focus evo
17 ?
19 ?
At level 1 I will take wizard: conjuration, infernal binder
opp schools: Divination and Abjuration
At level 2 I will take a 1 level dip into cleric. For domains I will take tactics to get 2 inactive rolls and inquisition: fate to get a 2nd level divine spell.
At level 4 - 13 I will take mystic theurge
All remaining levels will be wizard
I'm taking infernal binder half for role play reasons, and half for the bonus feat, but that may not be useful as I won't get it until 18th level.
My thinking is that oppossed schools will not be terribly painful as my cleric spells should be able to cover those roles, and the few occastions when wizard spells are better than cleric spells of that school, keeping a few scrolls around should suffice.
My leadership cohort will be a mega crafter who stays home and cooks. The DM has ruled that cohorts will not adventure, but will level up appropriately.
My biggest concern with this guy is escaping grapples. I'm thinking about dropping the infernal binder aspect in favor of the teleportation focus for that reason. I really like the binder's flavor for this character though.
Are there other concerns I should look at? Is there any feat that will boost my caster level? I know there was one in 3.5 and there is a third party one (that seems to powerful)
