I need help finding a game

Gamer Life General Discussion

I need help finding a game for a young lady. This is a Facebook post from a friend of mine and I told her I would help:

Quote:

Every time my lil niece says, "I don't want to play those game because there are no girl main characters or I don't want to watch those series (like Ninjago) because there are no girl main characters" my heart sank.

A while ago I was watching Ben 10 with my niece and nephew and my nephew really got into it, I mean he loves the show my niece wasn't that keen. I asked her why? She told me because the show was about a boy saving the world from aliens not about a girl. I told her that there is a girl in the show, his cousin...and she told me that, "she's not saving the world, she's helping Ben save it". :*(

She also started to tell me that she's iffy about math because in school a lot of her girlie friends are into other subjects...and not math/science. #$#Q^#(&$! What?!
She's also pretending to "hate" math because her girlie friends don't like it either. FML! I want to smack the s+@# out out of those girlie friends parents for not pushing them into the sciences/math and pushing for pink tu-tu's and boyfriends!

The little girl is 6 years old and really wants a game that she feels represents her somehow. She reads at a 1st grade level (I know, she's in 1st grade, what a shock!). She wants a game where the girl is the hero. She likes board games and video games.

Any suggestions?

Scarab Sages

For PC / video games, Costume Quest and Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams are well worth looking into, as are Recettear and Fortune Summoners. They are also all age appropriate.

Those are awesome! They are precisely what she's looking for. If I had young kids, I would definitely get them Costume Quest.

Scarab Sages

Glad I could help.

Recettear is AWESOME and will help her love math.

Also, why isn't she mlping it up? Just curious. Also, did she miss the cousin centric eps of early Ben 10? I know the series because my nephew loves it, I know they toned down her character (along with a host of others) due to their non toy status. Also there are a host of fan mlp games, including at least one rpg. The fighting game was cancelled unfortunately.....

I don't know the child. I've never met her. I just told my friend that I would see what I could find that would make her happy. Personally, if she were my child, I would introduce her to RPGs now. She would be able to play whatever she wants.

6 years old?

Mouse Guard.

Well, there's always caution when suggesting Mouse Guard for young players, because the setting is weirdly brutal, but in the fine tradition of young person's fiction (Mrs. Frisbee and the Rats of NIMH was also rather dark).

But as far as strong female characters, you have the whole organization run by a girl mouse, and one of the main guard mice is a tough girl at that.

Still, there are a lot of boy protagonists, even in that awesome series.

Seconding Mouse Guard.

There is another child-focused RPG called Faerys Tale, where again the leader of the good guys is a girl.

Dang, I was in this thread yesterday wracking my brains for something to reply with. I can't believe I overlooked Mouse Guard. Mouse Guard FTW for sure!

Two more to add to her list! I knew I could count on the gaming community. Any more suggestions for non-video games?

Hero Kids is a fun kid-friendly RPG. I ran it for my 8 year old sister and she really enjoyed it.

Rules are VERY simple, but could easily be beefed up if necessary

Mouse Guard is $61? It better be a good game at that price. It's a pretty hefty book. It's got great reviews though so it's definitely something I'm going to look into. I'll see if I can find a used copy for a lot less.

Hero Kids looks like it would be a lot of fun! I'm starting to think that I'm going to be asked to run some games for this child I've never met.

Sounds like the boxed set. The rulebook alone is about half that, but currently on backorder at Paizo.

Or, if you don't mind printing your own copy:

$61?

I hope that's the boxed set at least. The boxed set is quality, I own it. Comes with cards that make the rules a lot more fun.

Thank goodness. I went to Amazon and it was $61 to $270.
