Help! Creating new character!

Advice

I want to create an arcane caster whose primary focus is on crafting magic items and collecting books, etc. for his personal library but at the same time be effective as the only arcane caster in the group. Starting at level 1 in a home campaign, not using Society rules. Would prefer to make ranged attacks, preferably magic based (spells, wands, etc.) so I can focus feats and skills on crafting. Need help with everything: stats, class and archetypes, beginning equipment, future purchases/creations, etc. Please, if possible, reference where I can find your suggestions so I can do the homework. Thanks!

First thing I would say is talk to your dm about the kind of campaign he wants to run. If it isnt going to be the sort with lots of downtime, a character who's focus is on crafting will be really lack luster. You need days if not weeks of free time to craft anything of worth. You also need to know how the dm feels about crafting items. May dms dont like the idea of the character or the party gaining major advantages via crafting (as you only need to spend half the wealth for whatever items you like) and may have an issue with this kind of character.

As for the character, a wizard can pretty easily be very good at crafting without a huge investment. You get scribe scroll at 1st level and get bonus feats that can be crafting feats every 5 levels. Make sure your intelligence is as high as you can get it and you will function just fine as the arcane caster of the group. Everything else for a wizard is spell selection, which doesnt interfere with crafting. Its actually pretty easy to do this.

Other Arcane options include: Bard [Magician], Sorcerer [Arcane bloodline] and also take a look at the Mastercraftman feat.

you can find plenty of options at: d20pfsrd.com

Have fun!
