Riding a Climbing Mount

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

Ok, so I was looking at making a Small sized Summoner with an Eidolon with the Mount, Climb and Skilled (Climb) evolutions. (And taking Climb as a class skill with 1 point)

If you are wondering why Climb, Skilled (Climb) and the climb skill, the DC to climb across a ceiling with just handholds is a DC 30. The totals for a level 1 Quadruped with these is a +22 on the climb check with the ability to always take 10 allows climbing across such ceilings without worry of falling.

What would be required to stay seated on an Eidolon climbing in such a way? Would it be able to have leather padding and bone structures that emulate a saddle capable of holding you in while upside down? (Legs would wrap around some boney protrusions perhaps?)

What about fighting? Could one shoot a bow or cast spells if they have the appropriate skills and feats for doing so on a regular mount?

This is for PFS so no house rules.

On a side note, why can you select Climb multiple times to increase climb speed if the rules state you can't climb faster then your base speed?

AFAIK there are no specific rules for "staying in saddle while your mount is climbing".

The closest thing is "Stay in Saddle" of the Ride Skill which has a DC of 5. Usually 1 rank in Ride as a class skill is enough to pass this check automatically. And a military saddle gives +2 to this as well.

I would rule the same for flying mounts doing loop de loops. i.e. no check necessary.

And yes you can fight from the mount while its climbing just as you could fight from a flying mount.

The eidolon evolutions are more specific than the general rule so they will take precedence. I have seen quite a few monsters where their climb speed is faster than their actual land speed. Specific trumps general.

Combat saddle. Also I'd recommend a seat belt.

Unfortunately, neither items exist :p But I'll allow it.

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

The problem with putting a saddle on a Eidolon is you have to put it on it each time you summon it, and lug it around yourself when it isn't out, unless I'm mistaken and it stays with it when it travels between planes.

Rules quote for this?

Eidolon keeps everything it is wearing when it is unsummoned and resummoned AFAIK, including saddles.

A rope with a knot in it would serve a similar purpose.

I've never seen anywhere it says that it keeps or doesn't keep items when it vanishes.

You are correct. Which is why I asked a cunning question for the rules quote :p The link ability (where it states eidolon shares item slots with the summoner) does make me lean more towards it keeping the items. It is silly that you would have to dress the eidolon with expensive belts and rings (potentially) and then when it is slain you hope its in a retrievable location as everything the eidolon was wearing drops to the ground. Though if this is true, I put a motion forward that all eidolons shall henceforth be in the shape of an alluring nymph: Oh dear, it looks like she left her dress behind again...

I suggest referencing the rules for a Riding Gecko in Ultimate Equipment.

Larger than even giant geckos, these mammoth lizards have been specifically bred to be used as mounts. Prized for their ability to run along cave ceilings and sheer walls, they require exotic saddles to ride. A riding gecko has the same statistics as a giant gecko with the giant template (see Bestiary 3).

The implication is that an exotic saddle will keep you in place while it moves on the walls and ceiling.

In summary: Use an exotic saddle and a knotted rope for a harness and you are good :)
