So my friend is making a character but he doesnt know how many animals he is allowed to have. We remember somewhere that it said the total level of your animals cannot exceed your total level but we arnt sure. Can anyone clear this up? Right now the character we are making is level6 and he has two lvl3 "pets".

You normally can have only one animal companion.
If you get animal companion from two different classes you generally stack the level of the two different classes.
There are exceptions.
You should post the class or classes that you are getting the animal companion from and someone will be better able to answer your question.

If you get animal companion from two different classes you generally stack the level of the two different classes.
You only stack them if you want to, and then you must choose from the most restrictive list.
There are druid and ranger archetypes that let you split your AC levels as much as you like (so you could be level 12 with 12 animals).
There are no hard limits to the amount of normal animals you can buy and take with you, beyond the practicality of controlling them.

Must hold back...mustn't make cat lady character...
Name: Gertrude
Race : HumanClass : Druid
AL : CN
Hook : "Won't you come in for milk and cookies?"
Come on.. you know you want to finish this..
OP : You can have one animal companion and I think one familiar. I'm not sure if you can have two companions from two classes, I defer to the forum on that one. You can have archetypes that give you more animal companions (as Whale Cancer said, available to the ranger and druid).
For regular, non animal companion animals, there's no limit, just a lot of hassle and expense and annoyed GM if you try to use them all in combat.

If you're a pack lord druid you can have more and you can divide them up how you choose. Want a 6th level cat only, fine. 6 1st level cats, you're on your way to cat lady status.
Six is pretty weak, six could be just starting a cat breeding business. Now, if they're all named after her ex-husbands, celebrity crushes, and children that she never had... I'd be willing to bestow cat lady status on her.
