Improved Familiar

So if I take eldrich heritage to get my bard a familiar, will I still be able to take improved familiar when I hit level seven bard?

yes. But you would count as level 5(two lower) in regards to your familiar, so I would not let you take improved familiar that requires CL 7 before you are level 9, even though you technically meet that requirement. RAW: you just need caster level and familiar, not caster level in specific class(N/A) that grants familiar.
