The group that I played with has finally broken away from 4th edition. Though I enjoyed it, it feels good to break away. I don't necessarily want this character to be extremely powerful, I want it to be fun and efficient.
I've always wanted to a mounted themed character, and feel like now is the time. I've decided on a halfling, but can't seem to choose between a cavalier or trying to get a mounted ranged ranger to work. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There are lots of ways to play a mounted character. What would you like your character to do besides presumably riding a mount in combat. For instance you can play a summoner that has an eidolon with the mount evolution if you want to be casting while mounted. The cavalier is probably the best option for the classic lance weilding knight method, but that runs into problems because standard mounts dont do well in dungeons. Even playing a halfling, your riding dog though medium sized will struggle in key situations when terrain gets problematic.
A mounted ranger might work for archery, but again, it really depends on what you are looking for from your character besides having a mount.
Also, do you know if your group will allow 3rd party material? if it is practical in the setting, my favorite choice for a mounted character would be a Super Genius Games Dragon Rider.
