Holy Crap Spell. Possible?

Rules Questions

Can I prepare an Intensified Fire Snake (20d6 damage), use Spell Perfection to Maximize it, then use Metamagic Rod to empower it?

I don't see a problem with this, except for the phrase "...as long as the total modified level of the spell does not use a spell slot above 9th level." However, metamagic rods don't raise the level of the spell, so...is it possible?

Fire Snake: 5th level
Intensify Spell: add 1 level
Maximized Spell: add 3 levels

So it now uses a 9th level slot.

According to the description of metamagic rods, a metamagic rod can be used to apply additional metamagic feats to a spell already prepared with metamagic feats. So (if you have a greater metamagic rod), the rules say, "Yes, you can."

Metamagic Rods

Metamagic rods hold the essence of a metamagic feat, allowing the user to apply metamagic effects to spells (but not spell-like abilities ) as they are cast. This does not change the spell slot of the altered spell. All the rods described here are use-activated (but casting spells in a threatened area still draws an attack of opportunity). A caster may only use one metamagic rod on any given spell, but it is permissible to combine a rod with metamagic feats possessed by the rod's wielder. In this case, only the feats possessed by the wielder adjust the spell slot of the spell being cast.

Possession of a metamagic rod does not confer the associated feat on the owner, only the ability to use the given feat a specified number of times per day. A sorcerer still must take a full-round action when using a metamagic rod, just as if using a metamagic feat he possesses (except for quicken metamagic rods, which can be used as a swift action).

Lesser and Greater Metamagic rods: Normal metamagic rods can be used with spells of 6th level or lower. Lesser rods can be used with spells of 3rd level or lower, while greater rods can be used with spells of 9th level or lower.

Go get 'em, tiger!

Holy Crap is achieved with the following:

1. Be a paladin.
2. Get a manure card (catch off guard optional)
3. Smite evil!

Manure card?

Lolz. "Holy Crap".

But, regarding the OP, yes, a regular metamagic rod would work. It goes off the original spell level, not the modified spell slot.

It's what Roshgog does all the time.

O I C. Heh. Well, I'm thinking Fire Storm is better. But I really don't want fire. I'm making a Druid Lv9, Sorcerer (Crossblooded, blah blah +2 damage/die for one element) Lv1, Divine Scion Lv10 (+2 damage/die against evil). Gonna try and max the DPR. But I'm thinking fire might not be the best way to go, as many things are immune to it. So I'm trying to find a spell now that does nuts damage, good area, and all that.

Either way, thanks for the clarification, guys.

I think you are right about that. The text does differentiate between "spell level" and "spell slot".
