I have a question about Magical Knack and how the trait bonus works.

This is not for Society play--I know the trait isn't legal in PFS.

If I have a planned wizard1/sorcererX, obviously I can use magical knack to boost my wizard level without problems.

But could I use it instead to boost my sorcerer level?

For instance, if my wizard level is 1 and my sorcerer level is 5, then I have 6HD. Would magical knack boost my caster level for sorcerer to 6?

You can pick a class, as in a single class, and increase your effective caster level. So no you cannot boost your effective caster level for both Wizard & Sorcerer.

Actually, the trait is legal in society play now.

And yes, if you chose sorcerer instead of wizard, you could boost your sorcerer caster level to 6, but you would be wasting half the trait unless you expect to take another class/prestige class that loses another caster level somewhere.

In your example, you could apply it to wizard and you would only have 0 and 1st level spells but your caster level for those spells would be 3rd or, as has been mentioned, you could apply it to sorcerer and you would be able to cast 0, 1st, and 2nd level spells but your caster level for them would be 6th.
