Masterwork Weapon / Tool Question

Liberty's Edge 1/5

I'm sorry if this has been asked before. Part of one of my player's character concepts is that their character's primary weapon is a crowbar. (The character has the Catch Off-Guard feat.) They would like to have a crowbar that is a masterwork weapon. Essentially it would be a masterwork club that could be used to give a grants a +2 circumstance bonus on Strength checks made to force open a door or chest. Is there a reason their character can't have one made for 305 gold?

Probably not. The thing that limits the power of the catch off guard feat is that you have to use a crummy weapon with it.

I don't see any problem with the masterwork crowbar part, it just wouldn't be optimized as a weapon, so no bonus there.

I'll go ahead and ask the question, since I know it's coming:

Can a masterwork tool (or any other somehow-masterworked improvised weapon) be made into a +1 weapon?

This one has always been pretty up in the air. I wouldn't expect a PFS ruling here, but you could make an FAQ thread on the rules forum and hope for some bites. Ask a very straightforward question like Mystic Lemur's and you have the best chance at an answer from the FAQ team.

If they ever answered that with a "yes", I'd finally pull the trigger on that halfling two-weapon fighter chef I've been wanting to play...

Would his signature phrase be, "Your goose is cooked!"?

We had that character in a GURPS campaign, except it was a (effectively) a goblin berserker dual knife fighter. Rakouva was either terrifying or laughable, depending on her opponents armor.

Back on topic, wouldn't it be the same as any other masterwork tool, +50 gp, +2 to task, no bonus to use as a weapon? Or are you specifically asking if you can buy a "weaponized" crowbar by applying the masterwork weapon price to an improvised weapon item?

That is, I believe, what the original poster was asking.

Yes, the second question is the one I'm asking what I meant. Thanks for posting a more clear version of the question.

Thank you, I'll do that.

This topic has been discuss ad nauseam; you can see the whole thread HERE. I will warn you, there was no firm conclusion, except plenty of GMs (including me) saying 'no way, not at my table'.

You could play a magus and eventually cast greater magic fang + your arcane pool to keep up with the magic arms race.

There's also the triat Rough & Ready from Adventurer's Armory that removes the improvised weapon penalty from any tool that is part of one of your Crafts or Professions. In addition you receive a +1 trait bonus to attack rolls. Its not perfect and doesn't allow for enchanting, but better than nothing at this point.

I still wait with bated breath for the day I can enchant my 7th level Undertaker's (necromancer wizard) shovel with Disrupting and Ghost Touch. Le'Sigh...
