The Shield is my personal choice for best television show of all time. I have watched the entire run 4 times (once as it was actually on TV, and three more times on DVD), and I feel like I am due for another viewing.

The Exchange

Saw the final episode when it was first broadcast and forgot about it - now I caught it again from the episode when they raid the Armenian gangs and Make off with their millions...and now Glen Close has joined the show.

God awful time 12 at night to 1 in the morning...This should be on at 8pm for the kids.

Excellent show, bit melodramatic at times but still very good.

Funny thing is, recently I have been watching the reruns on a local spanish cable channel (the show is in English, but the channel is for the SoCal Mexican market) and remembering how much fun it was.

I have all 7 (I think it's 7) boxed sets, but it's nice to see it come on TV again - reminds me of the time when the show was on its first run. When it does come on I always watch it, much like any number of specific movies that I find when I am flipping around channels: The Road Warrior, The Thing, Goodfellas, etc. I have all the DVDs for these mind you, but they come on the TV - they are getting watched.

I enjoyed the show, but it did get too melodramatic for me around the end of season 5.

Part of it was that during the same period The Wire was airing, and eventually The Shield started to become painfully obvious that it was TV.

For a while, my friends and I started calling the front passenger seat of car's "Lem".

The Shield is basically a Greek tragedy - it should be at least somewhat melodramatic. The whole underpinning of the show is very different from The Wire (which is my second favorite show of all time).

Don't get me wrong, The Shield was great. It was just that it aired during the same period as The Wire, and for me that made it suffer a little. The Wire just felt so real and it made every other police drama at the time feel that much less real. At the time I was sharing a house with 2 friends and both shows were watching events for us.

If I were to go back and rewatch The Shield, it wouldn't be as much of an issue.

The Wire is both my favorite TV show and I believe it to also be the best made show of all time (just the level of craftsmanship, planning and attention to detail involved).

It's quite funny to compare The Shield with Michael Chiklis's previous cop-show, The Commish.

The difference in tone is so vast it's silly.

I love the comment you made to me when you loaned me Season 1 "You'll have a question around Season 2...I already know what it is, and I don't know the answer".

The question was "How the *$&% did this show never win an Emmy?!"
but you already knew that :)

The Exchange

This needs to be rebooted as a film. Michael Chiklis deserves an Oscar for the Shield so they need to do it as a Movie.
