Entangle on a ship?

Hey, I had a doubt about using entangle on the deck of a ship.

I thought the wood it self would sprout small branches. Would it be possible?

I would say that it wouldn't work because the wood is not "natural" at that point, it is "man-made", so to speak. I always took the spell's requirement to mean growing (or living) fauna and plantlife. If it's "dead" then it can't "grow" to fulfill the spells effect. Does that make any sense?

EDIT: However, you might be able to make the arguement for it to work if there was algae growing on the ship.

Could you entangle the ocean and have tentacles wrap around the ship then, If you targeted a reef nearby? I think the wood would have to be non-manufactured wood to qualify.
