Mounted on horse - tactical movement?

Rules Questions

Apologies if this is an old question (flogging a dead...?) but how far can a mounted character move in tactical combat? I did try and search the rule book and forum ..
Thanks for any help..

The character can move the speed of the mount he currently rides.

Sovereign Court

It would depend on the mount's movement speed and on a few other optional factors but usually at the mount's base rate.

Is tactical combat different from regular combat?

Silver Crusade

Mount's base speed unless wearing barding, then it depends on what type of barding. In general, 40 ft goes to 30 ft, 50 ft goes to 35 ft, 60 ft goes to 40 ft. Heavy barding causes the mount to run at x3 speed, instead of x4.

So if you are riding a horse with medium barding, your tactical speed is 40 ft, with a x4 run speed, I believe.

Sorry if I'm being daft here but I can only find speeds for mounts as hourly and daily rates - not a movement rate per round?

Silver Crusade

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Speed would be listed in the animal companion's stat block under druid, or in the Bestiary stat block for the appropriate animal.

For example, a horse's speed is listed as 60 ft. So that means that a horse can move 60 ft in one movement action.

Got it - thanks. I didn't think of looking in a bestiary (doh!) I assumed it would be in the main rule book somewhere (maybe it should be...pretty basic stuff??)

Thanks very much for taking the time to help.

Side question here:

If you mount moves more than 5ft you may only take a single melee attack. Do you lose your move action as well?

I know you would not use your move action to actually move, the mount uses its actions to move. My question is can I still take a move action to draw a weapon, or retrieve an item, or to sheathe a weapon, etc.?

The rules are clear on attacking and spellcasting but it is silent on this, so I assume that while you can only take a single melee attack if the mount moves more than 5ft, you do not lose your move action.

Sovereign Court

Well none of a normal animals stats are in the core rule book, just the modified animals that make up the druid animal companion.

The game assumes someone there has a bestiary.

Yeah, you retain your normal compliment of actions, only your ability to attack is limited by movement. So you could use your move action to draw weapon or what have you, or even take a full round action like Death or Glory to make your single melee attack with.
