Factions Questions - Selection and Interaction

Pathfinder Society

I plan to begin playing PFS soon and would like to hear OOC suggestions regarding faction selection and how factions interact with gameplay.

Specifically, would it be useful to learn what factions are popular or prevalent in one's region? Could choosing a locally popular faction make for a more enjoyable game experience? Can PCs cooperate as they seek to accomplish their faction missions, or is every PC on their own? Etc.

Based on my character concepts, I have a few factions already in mind (Andoran, Sczarni, and Silver Crusade), but if possible, I'd like to glean a sense of how the choice might impact gameplay.

Welcome to the institution.

I was going to say this could be a minor benefit as it could help you complete faction missions, but then i remembered the faction missions are about to go away.

I don't see anything useful to do with that information anymore.

PCs can cooperate as long as the mission isn't secret. In my experience they very often DO cooperate.

Usually if it comes up at all its usually a little bickering between the andorans and chelaxians.

It's not our fault Andorans have no sense of humor and a faction leader who got hired for his looks!

Glass houses, devil-lover.

Thanks BigNorseWolf. I hadn't heard that the faction missions will be ending.

I've enjoyed reading the Faction Talk threads, and the activity in some of them encouraged my original questions, as I took them to indicate the strong role-playing interests and abilities amongst some PFS players.

I'm sure I don't know what you're talking about. :D

Are faction missions ending or just coming in a new form?

Scarab Sages

A mixture of both, acording to a podcast a few months ago (Know Direction podcast). The new guide will come out on the 5th Mr. Brock has said, and go into effect on the 14th.

Their example was that the 2nd PA point would be earned in a secret (from the players) sub-goal. In the podcast, the example was a mission to get an urn. So you get the urn, kill monsters, and get back to the society. You give the urn to Drandle, he looks in it, and asks "Where are the ashes?" You forgot to check for the ashes, and forgot to chase down the kobold that stole them. No 2nd PA point. Never was it stated you had to get the ashes (although one might infer that from getting an urn.) Another possible example was making a rubbing of a wall. However, it's in code: You might need a check to figure that out, then you must find the cipher for the 2nd PA.

They also mentioned more faction specific scenarios, which would have a different form of faction missions. The andoran session would be very faction themed, for example.

I think there are better opportunities for roleplay among PCs of different factions, rather than choosing what is most common. Around here everyone cooperates to the point where it is a little silly sometimes ("Hey, can everyone, uh, look away for a moment?") but its better than the alternative.

I wish I had chosen the older factions at first since when you do older scenarios you get lumped into the factions that existed at the time. It can occasionally lead to missions that don't entirely make sense for your character.

What are some examples of older v. newer factions Chris?

I've been working off of the 4.3 Guide and understand a new version is forthcoming soon. I'm hoping to play some Season 4 modules, as I understand they're based in Varisia. I imagine that the factions I have in mind (Andoran, Sczarni, Silver Crusade) all existed then, but I'd be interested in learning which factions are older v. newer.

Cheliax, Taldor, Quadira, Andoran, and Osirion were the first 5. Then they added Silver Crusade, Grand Lodge, Sczarni, Lantern Lodge, and Shadow Lodge. (The last two are going away.)

Shadow Lodge

Heh, that's Qadira, no 'u'. :P

Yeah, basically the nation-factions are the originals, and the rest are the new ones.

I thought it was a nation dedicated to the number four! Now I am sad. :(

Grand Lodge 4/5

As is:
Season 0, Season 1, and Season 2 offer faction missions only for the original 5 nations/factions.

There is a set of directions in the 4.3 guide as to which of the newer factions use which of the older faction missions for their play in these scenarios.

Season 3 and Season 4 have all 10 factions.

Season 5 will only have 8 factions, and use the new non-faction-specific general 2nd PP mission for PP.

Some people pick the most played/popular.factions where they play hoping the othe players will do the faction missions for.them. I really disdain this because I feel they expect.others to do their work for them but I have to admit it is not a bad idea, especially for the dumb stupid fighters with next.to.no skill points. Though I hear Andoran is the faction for dumb stupid fighters. _If_ what.I hear is true, Nearly every faction mission of thiers is an assassination, dumb stupid fighters should be able to handle that.

I use to get a real kick about convincing players.to join. Cheliax because.we.are.the most fun but one player where I lived who switched just to het others to do the faction mission for.him really rubbed me the wrong way.

I still believe Cheliax has been the most fun. I have played.it with several PCs..also.played Several.Osirion PCs and a Shadow Lodge agent. I have also run around 15 different scenarios go ing me a chance.to.read.all.of those missions for.every faction.

Eve..of factions are.handled differently now, you will still have a chance to play.a.bunch.of old games where they matter.more, so.think.about that as you choose.

Thanks Pathar, kinevon, and Raymond Lambert -- very helpful -- and I found the pincite in the 4.3 Guide regarding the early season adaptations.
