Memorizing lower level spells.

Rules Questions

Can I use my 5th level Memorized Spell Slots to memorize spells of a lower level? Ie: I have all my 3rd level spell slots used up but need to add Invisibility to my list of spells for the day... can I memorize it into a 5th level spot?

Yes, you can. From the general Magic rules:

The various character class tables show how many spells of each level a character can cast per day. These openings for daily spells are called spell slots. A spellcaster always has the option to fill a higher-level spell slot with a lower-level spell. A spellcaster who lacks a high enough ability score to cast spells that would otherwise be his due still gets the slots but must fill them with spells of lower levels.

Thanks boss, was looking for that text. Turned in a report to Hero Lab for erroring when I tried to do this with their software. :)

Just remember that unless you have Heightened Spell, the DC of a lower level spell that uses a higher level spell slot will not change. It does not really matter for Invisibility, but if you did that with Fireball, then it would have the DC of a 3rd level Fireball even though it is a 5th level spell slot.

Hey,

Is using a higher spell slot to memorize a lower level spell a 1:1 thing? I mean if I use a 5th level spell slot to memorize a 1st level spell can I only memorize one 1st level spell? Or can I memorize five 1st level spells? If not five different 1st level spells would I have memorized the 1st level spell five times?

I guess the bigger Q is absent improving my INT score is there any way to memorize more spells of a particular level?

The Arcane Discovery Split Slot may be what you are looking for.

Split Slot wrote:
Once per day when you prepare spells, you may treat any one of your open spell slots as if it were two spell slots that were two spell levels lower. For example, a 9th-level wizard can split a 5th-level slot into two 3rd-level slots, preparing fireball and lightning bolt in those 3rd-level slots. For all purposes, the two lower-level slots are treated as that lower level (so the split 5th-level slot used for a fireball has a DC as if it were in a normal 3rd-level slot). Splitting a 2nd-level slot lets you prepare two additional cantrips (which you can cast over and over, just like normally prepared cantrips). This discovery has no effect on cantrips or 1st–level spells. You may select this discovery multiple times; each time you select it, you may split another spell slot when you prepare spells. You cannot split a slot that you created by splitting a higher-level slot. You must be at least 5th level to select this discovery.
