Red Aegis Kickstarter

Red Aegis Kickstarter

Wasn't sure where to put this, but I figure it would be of some interest to fans of Golarion/PF because at the $30K stretch-goal, the product will include a Hacker's guide written by Stephen Radney MacFarland, making it compatible with the PF system.

At its heart its an RPG wherein you play a dynasty, rather then a single character. Each 'episode' will work just like an ordinary RPG session, but you play a descendent of your last character each time (so you are always someone different in each session, but because of bloodlines, many things will hold-over from previous sessions). Unlike most RPGs, though, this one will have a beginning and an end: there will be a set number of sessions (10 being the default as of right now), but you can play with more or less - its YOUR call!

This allows players to play-through the history of their world, touching on all the important turning points: You will take your family from discovering fire, to settling the stars. At its core there is the world of Namarune (map by the brilliant Mike Shley), and your group will play one of the many tribes as its rises in civilization. However, the basic core rules and concept can be applied (overlayed) onto any RPG, and the first such they intend to do is the wildly popular PF system. Theoretically, you could play the Red Aegis game right up to the start of the current Golarion time period, where your regular game begins. The 'end game' is some dramatic turning point in history - the death of Aroden would make a perfect apocalyptic event to end your story-arc (as would so many others). Folks interested in running a campaign moving through the history of Golarion will be able use the Red Aegis campaign rules on top of the normal PF rules.

However, the Hacker's Guide that will make this all possible will only become available (written by one of PF's own designers!) if the $30K stretch goal is reached - lets help make this possible.

So it's not a Pathfinder setting but one of the stretch goals is PF compatible?

Correct. We want to provide some strech goals that allow for supporters to play in the game of their choice if they're not desiring to play in ours. Also, at the macro level, people will be able to use our dynastic system in conjunction with (for example) PFRPG at the micro.

To add to what Matt has said: Red Aegis will have its own RPG system (a dice pool system) for play on the default world (Namarune). This way, players will only have to buy the one set of rules to play the game.

However, the game will be designed in such a way (modular) that it can be used as a sourcebook in conjunction with other rules, so if you do not care for the Loremaster RPG system, you can use your own, but still play with the other rules governing cross-generational and historic play.

Its almost like getting three products in one - a set of rules governing history-spanning, dynastic play, a set of RPG rules, and a setting. Think of it as a buffet - you choose which pieces you want to use, and plug those into the game of your choice.

The beauty of it is it can played in conjunction with another RPG game. Your characters in your regular game can find stuff that was part of the history you unlocked with Red Aegis. You may find out your character was once an Iobarian King, or is the inheritor of a Shory Artifact, or even the last of the pure blood Azlanti! You no longer just read about the history of the world, you become a part of it; you are there, on the scene, as each major turning point unfolds. Your only limitation is your imagination - each session is about what you want it to be about.

The 'Hacker's Guide' is simply a bridge between the macro rules, and the RPG rules of your choice, and Pathfinder will be the first to receive such treatment.

Heya folks. Just wanted to pop in and say hello.

I'm Brian R. James, lead designer of RED AEGIS Roleplaying Game. My name may not be familiar to many of you as I've spent most of my design career writing for Wizards of the Coast. I do have one Pathfinder credit to my name, and that is "Giants Revisited", released early last year.

I'd be happy to answer any questions about RED AEGIS and how the Hacker's Guide may help enhance your current campaign in Golarion.

Cheers!

I'd rather hear how Red Aegis can help my current Pathfinder campaign in Midgard, but I get what you are saying. :)

Very curious about the Dynastic rules. Could you expand on that a little? The last time I used some they were for Pendragon, and I liked that quite a bit.

Liberty's Edge

This sounds like it should probably be in general roleplaying (or some such forum topic, I don't go down that way much).

As to the actual topic, I want to make sure I get the pricing right, to get the "hacker's guide", which contains the rules for how to hack apart your system and graft it on to Pathfinder, requires the $50 buy in for pdfs?

Hey Wolf, it’s awesome to see you interested in this! Thanks for the question and comments. The dynastic nature of the game is what has us completely thrilled to be designing it. We have been working hard to polish up the nature of it as to not confuse anyone who reads about it. I can, however, give you some juicy details of what we’re molding into a codified system.

One of our major motivations, with our gameplay experience, is to have hundreds, if not thousands, of years pass between each session. Your character in the new session will be a descendant of your past character, and will inherent characteristics of the applied dynasty. For example, if in the past, your ancestor slayed the great minotaur lord Kogulous, you would not only gain in-game story-based rewards for such a feat, you would also earn addition Prestige to use in the construction of your descendants in following sessions. Prestige is a value pool that is increased based upon the actions of your character. Some might view this as an alternate experience pool, and they wouldn’t necessarily be completely incorrect. That said, different players would earn at different rates, depending on their exploits in the campaign. In addition, we are implementing a dynamic system by which the storyteller/dungeon master/game master might change from session to session. What we’re calling the Arbiter will be a role that players will aspire to become, due to the increase in Prestige and other story-based rewards. This process is governed by an element of the game that revolves around the RED AEGIS itself. I don’t want to say too much more, as it might spoil that backstory before we have it codified and clearly defined.

Another interesting aspect, as your descendants traverse the timeline, is that your characters will be defined not by equipment, but by their followers. Followers will have specific skill-sets and professions that will aid your character, and will help define them as their dynasty evolves. This is going to allow for an immense amount of customization, and it’s something I’m eager to show off once completed.

We have contracted Stephen Radney-McFarland, and I expect he’ll be charging full-force to help us master the connection to an existing Midgard campaign that uses the Pathfinder RPG system. We are, as well, looking to add support for FATE, D&D (insert edition), and other systems. This, of course, depends upon our ability to raise the requisite funds.

Correct. The hack guide is a bonus that comes with the $50 level.

No problem. Let us know if anything else comes up.

As of yesterday, this product met its primary goal and is now funded.

However, in order to provide the wonderful Hacker's Guide - to allow PF players to use the dynastic rules in their games - Vorpal Games needs to meet the $30K stretch-goal. The Hacker's Guide is more a Pathfinder toolbox then the basic game, so this is where members of this community should really take notice.

Don't just read about the history of your favorite setting... LIVE IT.

We've reached our funding goal. Now it's time for our first STRETCH GOAL. At $30,000, we'll add the Red Aegis Hacker's Guide to the Digital Boxed Set. The Hacker's Guide, written by full-time Paizo designer Stephen Radney-MacFarland, will include guidelines for incorporating RED AEGIS into your existing Pathfinder game.

One of our Stetch Goals: RED AEGIS TACTICS
Chronospheric storms wrack the annuls of time and space as the anchors of power react violently against the impending invasion. Bloodlines vie for power as they call upon the prestige of their past, and summon forth the vestige of their famed ancestors. Glory to the victor as the death of all ages begin!

Red Aegis Tactics is a small tactical skirmish game that is designed for 2-6 players. Players construct an army using everything from axe-weilding barbarians, to spell-slinging archmages--from incredulous biker gang vagabonds, to futuristic space soldiers. This is truly the battle of all ages. Construct your army, deploy to the fields of battle, and defend the prestige of your legacy.

Now folks will be able to apply the dynastic/historic rules to their Pathfinder games, and give 'bloodlines' a whole new depth.

The next (35K) stretch goal will feature an adventure written by none other then Ed Greenwood himself! Lets make that happen.

They've way exceeded expectations, and now are only another $2006 to go for the $65K stretch-goal, with only 7 hours left!.

If you've been thinking about jumping on, now's the time... do it before the goblins set-fire to your trousers!
