CR on animal companion with celestial template

Rules Questions

3 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

I ask this becuase an aasimar with Celestial Servant can give their pet the celestial template they gain SR gains SR equal to new CR +5.

I am not sure what their CR would be to calculate this.

No good answers yet?

Technically an animal companion isn't supposed to have a CR at all, because it's a class feature of the PC/NPC. I don't think that applies in this case. Maybe it would be the PC/NPC's CR?

I think you use your own Class Level + 5.
Familiars eventually gain that level of SR at class level 11,
but you can get Celestial Template familiars before then...
I don't think there's any sudden shift in the CR level for them,
it's just that the Celestial Template SR becomes superfluous with the normal Familiar SR past that level.
(if you rule that they lose the normal familiar SR if the master is dead, they would still retain the celestial SR though)

It's sort of a vague thing, but it's related to whether CR is considered a HD dependent effect.
Literally and directly it isn't, but functionally adding HD does affect CR.
Thus using the Master's CR makes sense. I don't know any better solution.

I was thinking the Druid level equivilant of the companion. Since an Aasimar nature oracle can spend the favored class bonus to raise the level of the animal too.

Yeah, that's how I rule it also, like Familiars, if you have an 'effective class level' for the Familiar/Companion feature that is different than max character level, you use that as the basis of the calculation.

Be careful with SR though, it cuts both ways, and even if the Companion has the INT and you can use custom tricks or pushing,
it's a pain in the ass to spend your action to command them, so they can raise/lower SR, so you or allies can cast a spell on it.
