Rasputin's Miracle Spell (SPOILERS)

Reign of Winter

I notice that Rasputin's statblock allows him the ability to cast Miracle 3/day. His statblock gives no tactical information of how he should use his most powerful spell.

What should I have him do with it?

Shadow Lodge

He hasn't got 25,000 gp worth of diamond dust on his person, so he can use the miracle spell to "duplicate any cleric spell of 8th level or lower, duplicate any other spell of 7th level or lower, undo the harmful effects of certain spells, such as feeblemind or insanity, [or] have any effect whose power level is in line with the above effects."

He could keep the spell in reserve in case the PCs land a feeblemind or insanity spell on him. He could use it to replicate the lower-level spells his tactics have him casting...with the save DCs of a level 9 spell. He could use it to create a contingent raise dead on himself, giving him yet another shot at avoiding death.

If I were him, I'd do a Delayed Resurrection. It goes off 5 minutes after the PCs leave. That way, the PCs escape... and he wakes up afterward alive and fully healthy. You could even have him appear just as the PCs get into the Hut, scream "Nooooo!" because they're outside his grasp, and the door slams shut on him. ;)

Add the 1,500 gp focus for contingency to his person and give him a contingency Heal, or perhaps something weirder.

He does need 25,000 GP of diamond dust to pull any of the really over-the-top miracles. He's currently at NPC baseline and so lacks some interesting things; you could bump up his wealth and gear and give him the +1 CR for Exceptional Resources.

Rasputin still being around after the PCs are done would have nasty repercussions for Earth.

If it's a spell-like ability, I don't think a material component is required.

Is it a spell like ability? I don't have the book, so I'm not sure, but if it's 3/day that sounds like a SLA.

He is an Oracle - so no, it isn't a spell like ability - just a spontaneous caster's flexibility.

My campaign won't hit Rasputin for a while (still only in the midst of book one) but I'll probably use Miracle to at least once make the PC's think they have defeated him but give him an escape (in the book they talk about him having used Miracle in the past to create a simulacrum of himself that was killed and buried in his place).

I'm actually really curious and a bit uncertain how Book 5 will end up running in a real campaign - the initial troop battles seem highly capable of being TPK's and even at the fairly high levels that PCs will be by the time they are facing Rasputin he seems like a truly formidable foe - capable of pushing even a fairly optimized party especially with smart use of a time Miracle or two for ideas.

In the original draft, the

Spoiler:
projected image of Rasputin in the Abbott House (Area F1) was actually another buffed-out simulacrum sent to foll the PCs into thinking they'd killed Rasputin early,
, so I'd say that's a fine idea to bring to the table. =-)
