Need help creating a character?

Pathfinder Society

Liberty's Edge

So I haven't played 3.x/Pathfinder in YEARS, but the opportunity to join a local Pathfinder Society game has come up, and I'm taking the chance. I've decided on a race (Half-Orc) and a Class (Ranger) but then things kind of fell apart.

I have a point spread in mind:

Strength 12 +1
Dexterity 17 13 +3
Constitution 10
Intelligence 12 2 +1
Wisdom 14 5 +2
Charisma 8 -1

20 points spent, put the +2 bonus in Dex making it 19.

I even have skills!

Handle Animal 1 -1
Knowledge (geography) 1 +1
Knowledge (nature) 1
Perception 1 + 2
Profession (trapper) 1 + 2
Stealth 1 + 3
Survival 1

But then three things hit me and I'm at a loss.

Feats, and bonus feats:

I should still get a feat for being level 1, and I guess in Pathfinder I get 2 bonus feats from... somewhere? I know this character will be
Osirion, and they have one that gives a nice bonus to Perception...

Equipment:

Out of 150 gold, I have figured out a way to spend half of it. What am I missing/needing for average play?

25 - studded leather (+3 AC, +5 max dex) - 15 AC ( lbs)
30 - short bow (1d6, crit x 3, 60 ft) (2bs)
3 - arrows x 60 (9lbs)
15 - scimitar (1d6, crix 18-20x2) (4lbs)
3 - light wooden shield (5lbs) (armor check penalty -1)
10 - traveller's outfit (8lbs)
2 - backpack (2lbs)

Bonus Material:

I have the core three books, and the PDF you download for free when you join the society; is there other material I need to be at least aware of to make a Ranger viable in most play?

Thank you for your time.

Smart play always beats smart builds. So being a smart player will do more good then having an uber powerful character.

If you want to be viable just make sure you have a use in combat and out of combat. Your character shoudl do just that.

Grand Lodge 4/5

You get one feat for being a 1st level PC. You get to take two traits for being a PFS PC.

Along with the faction traits available in the Guide to PFS OP, there is another free download available with some more traits. Some of them are not legal, but most of them are. Remember that you can only take one trait from any particular group, so you couldn't take two Osirion traits, for example.

Some things to think about buying:
Potion of Cure Light Wounds (50)
Alchemist's Fire (20)
Holy Water (25)
Club (0)
Tanglefoot Bag (50)
Acid (10)
Backpack (2)

Some options to consider:
Sling and bullets instead of the shortbow and arrows. Saves you money untuil you can go for the real longbow you will want to take with a high Dex PC.
Morningstar (8) instead of club

Feat choices:

Ranged combatant:
Point Blank Shot (optional for Ranger, but still needed for some of the archery tree feats)
Weapon Focus: Longbow (assuming you are going ranged/longbow)

Melee combatant:
Weapon Focus: Scimitar
Combat Reflexes
12 Strength means you do not qualify for Power Attack and that feat tree
12 Intelligence means you don't qualify for Combat Expertise and that feat tree

Skill Focus if you want to be really good with one of your skills.
Improved Initiative if you want to go earlier during the round
Weapon Finesse, but you'll probably want to spend two ranks on Perform *Dance), in that case, to take the Dervicsh Dance feat if you get that source book (use Dex for attack and damage with a scimitar when your other hand is empty)

Note on the shield: Not compatible with most ranged weapons. Consider a buckler. Same AC mod, leaves that hand available for weapon use, spell casting (at 4th level), wand use, etc.

Liberty's Edge

I'll need to find this other PDF, since game is in two days.

There's a lot to consider; hadn't considered the importance of a slightly higher STR or INT. I chose the shortbow not just because its cheaper, but because I eventually see this character as being mounted with a "pet" horse, and I know longbows can't be used while mounted... but it may make more sense, then, to just have a shortbow for those times.

What direction would you like to take this PC? Would you like him to be big on archery, or big on melee, or possibly something else entirely? Rangers are a good introduction to the game, you just select a combat style and the class itself slowly introduces features to get you use to other parts of the game.

So what combat style where you going for?

So far, I'd raise that con if you could spare it. Constitution is pretty important, it keeps you from being dead. You might consider taking a bit out of your intellect for it, you already get a good number of skill points. Oh! Also, get rope if you can. Rope is useful and an adventurer staple.

Liberty's Edge

I thought having something of a hunter-turned-bounty hunter with some focus on urban and local terrains would give the PC flavor, and that I'd want to try to focus primarily on ranged but give him enough bite with melee that he'd never be too lost when it close quarters. I liked the idea of someone who could use a bow mounted or in close quarters, although obviously both of those sitautions would be limited.

Every character gets a set of clothing worth 10 gp or less free at the start of their career, so you don't need to buy a set unless you want something that costs more than that. And yeah, I agree with the above on terms of raising that Con - I played a Con 10 character to level 4 (where he purchased a Con +2 belt) and it was a miracle sent from his deity that he ever made it that far. He was at -9 HP several times, and barely ever stabilized because of no Con bonus.

I just wanted to note that if you don't like your character, you can rebuild it to anything else to want until you play the character at level 2. (So anytime prior to PLAYING your character at level 2 or above)

So, if you find you don't like it so much at level 1, you still got time to decide.

(Edit: And this is why we need a PFS specific rules & advice forum...so that there's a place for people who want to play PFS to ask questions about PFS to people who have been playing PFS)

Liberty's Edge

I still can't find this PDF with the mini-traits, can anyone direct me to it or at least give me its name?

The "Character Traits" PDF from there has a bunch of traits.

The Guide to Organized Play also has some faction traits in it, you can "buy" it for free from this page:
