Gold Weight - Is there an official rule?

Pathfinder Society

Silver Crusade

Hi Everyone!

One of my players recently asked me about how to reduce his gold weight (level 1) because it was tipping him over the threshold into medium encumbrance. I did a few searches on the forums for the money weight but through absence of a solid answer or lack of searching ability I could not find a solution.

Is there an official PFS ruling on gold weight not counting towards your weight? I know most DM's say to just hand wave it, and thats fine, but I would rather know if there are rules that support this stance so my players don't walk into someone else's game and get blindsided.

Thanks,

Convert the gold into platinum to make it 1/10th the weight. Or convert it into precious or semi-precious gemstones for even less weight.

If I convert 5,000 gp (100 lbs. in gold coins) to platinum, the weight becomes 10 lbs. If I convert it to saltwater pearls, the weight of my 5000 gp becomes 2 lbs.

I could also go crazy with small diamonds and a total weight of 0.4 lbs.

This section states that gold weighs:

The standard coin weighs about a third of an ounce (50 to the pound).

Characters are always assumed to have some sort of "home".

Whether that is the Grand Lodge or an actual home somewhere, it doesn't matter. There is no mechanical benefit, and it is all fluff.

Well I suppose except for gold weight.

Generally, as a player, I assume I'm leaving the lions share of my gold either in my Grand Lodge foot locker or at home. Otherwise you have some characters that haven't spent like 20,000 or more in gold, and that weight would make almost any but the strongest characters heavily encumbered before applying the weight of their gear.

My necromancer carries all of his wealth in onyx gems. Since you can get full value back for selling them, they are basically currency with the added bonus of animating dead.

All the basis are covered here. Good job forum stalkers!

Or get a handy haversack

But that would only cover 6000gp, at which point you have maxed out your handy haversack weight limit of 120lbs.

Best bet is a combination of the above mentioned strategies AND a handy haversack (who doesn't need one).

Unless one of my PCs is just completely anti-Abadar for some reason, my characterd generally dont carry gold. I have just about all their vaulables stored in a Bank of Abadar, which I would presume has some significant magical means of being able to tell that my letter of note is authentic, and if it was stolen, to be able to tell that it isnt my character actually trying to withdraw the money. :P

This. That's why you can only purchase things in a settlement of 5000+ people - they have to have a Bank of Abadar, or at least an Abadar Transaction Market.
