Baby zen archer advice

Advice

Hi all

I’m creating a character for an upcoming Legacy of Fire campaign (no spoilers please!), and I’ve settled on a Zen Archer. His role will be to deal damage in combat and scout out of combat.

Below is my first level build (20 point stat buy, Paizo only material) and at the end is how I plan to advance him to level 10. My concern is that it will be level 3 before the build really gets going. He’ll have decent enough defences before that but pretty weak offense.

I’d welcome some suggestions on how I might survive and contribute in those perilous first two levels – and indeed comments on the build as a whole. My only caveat is that I have a miniature painted and ready to go, so he needs to be a medium sized and human-shaped creature (ie not a dwarf, which I know are great zen archers).

Thank you for your time!

You might want to think about hunters eye being able to ignore the first range increment with your bow is pretty good. If you are not absolutely tied to half-orc for you character concept, Human, Dwarf, Vanara, and even Grippli are better races. Human gives you an extra feat, and the others will let you have a higher dex, so you don't suck as badly at first level.

What sick man send babies to fight?

Aasimar and Suli are both thematically fitting for Legacy of Fire, though the latter isn't statwise the best option.

Though I am curious, why did you choose half-orc? They're not exactly the most common sight on Katapesh, since orcs don't live near it.

Thanks for the comments - I choose half-orc because I want to scout and think darkvision is very important to do that effectively.

I have tried a few builds as human, but to be honest I struggled to find something I really wanted to spend the bonus feat on.

Well, Dwarves have darkvision, and Zen Archers don't give up the bonus to movement speed, so you offset the movement penalty.

Another option that fits the campaign theme is a Div-spawn Tiefling. They get Darkvision, a few resistances and a bonus to Dex.

Aasimars get darkvision too. My suggestion would be lower WIS a bit, (18 or 19) raise DEX by 1 and raise INT to 10.

Couldn't think of feats for first level? Improved Init, Toughness, heck Dodge is a good throw away if you can't think of any at all. Point Blank Shot or Precise Shot (depending on what you took for the monk Bonus).

I would advise against Hunter's Eye it will RARELY come up if you use a longbow, how many times are you shooting at enemies over 110' away?

Another option for race is a Half-elf with the drow blooded racial traits. You'll get Darkvision, and the spell-like abilities will allow you to take arcane strike to add more damage to all of your arrows each round.

If you haven't already, then give http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2nix8&page=1?Zen-and-the-Art-of-Monk-Mainte nance-A-Guide a read, but be sure to read it all and the spoilers because it has some stuff that some DMs might disagree with.

I'm currently playing an middle aged Aasimar Zen Archer. I used the Immortal Spark racial trait from the Advanced Players Guide to replace my Daylight ability because someone is playing an Orc and the Daylight dazzles them. Immortal Spark allows you to cast Lesser Age Resistance once per day, allowing you to effectively ignore the physical penalties due to middle age while retaining all of the mental ones.

You also give up the Aasimar racial bonus to Diplomacy and Perception, but you're already not getting those, so it's not a big loss.

Unless there are rules against dipping to a 7, you could do what I did to get a more rounded stat line:

STR 14 (5)
CON 14 (5)
DEX 14 (5)
INT 9 (-1)
WIS 16 (10)
CHA 7 (-4)

With the +2 to WIS and CHA, along with the +1 to INT, WIS, and CHA for middle age, it gives you well rounded physical abilities, no negative modifiers, and seems a LITTLE less optimizer than having a 21 at the onset. At level 4, you get your 20 and your +5 back, just after you start to benefit from being able to use your WIS for your ranged attacks. You still get Darkvision and you get a few resistances which are nice at lower levels.

Now, I started with the Aasimar because I just like the race. Once I found out someone was playing an Orc, I set out to check out the Racial Traits to see what I could do to replace it. Once I found the Immortal Spark Racial Trait in the ARG, my character idea fully fell into place. A little bit of optimization, a little bit of character story.

As for the first few levels, I didn't add much damage at levels 1 and 2, but since I can make AoO even when wielding a bow to to IUS, I tried to stay between the monsters and the casters. It wasn't until this past weekend during our first game at 3rd level that I noticed my damage and effectiveness make a jump.

It's been a fun class to play and the guide I linked was very helpful.
