Rules Questions

Alright, so I'm a relatively new DM and I ran a module for a friend last night. He was facing a sort of wood elemental protector in a rundown tavern. Fearing that he was on the verge of getting a serious beat down he says he runs out of the door and waits off just to the side of the door, holding an action to attack the thing on sight.

The creature has wood shape, so I have it walk up to the wall he ran behind (which was indeed wooden) and use wood shape to basically shift the wall between them out of the way. They are now adjacent to each other.

Here is where the questions came in.

He argued that he should get an attack of opportunity, which I disagreed on the basis that he wasn't able to make the attack upon the protector entering the square in front of him, because the wall was in the way. He argued other wise and since it was late, I allowed it.

So, for future reference, should I have allowed him an AOO in this situation?

Secondly he said that his held action came into play, to which I disagreed once more on the premise that the protector's turn was over and it was his characters turn already. Thus he lost his held action because it was now his turn. We didn't go through on this one as I don't like to budge too much.

Now, I feel less confident about this one as I suppose it could still be done at the end of his turn. Sort of like MTG where you can do something at the end of another players turn if set up right.

Should I have allowed the player his held action in this case?

As you probably noticed this is already finished, I'm just curious for future reference so I can improve my DMing knowledge. Any insight and rule showings would be much appreciated.

First, from the description, there would be no AOO. You provoke by leaving a threatened square, not entering one. Also, when the wood golem would have done wood shaping ability, he would have had total cover from the wall itself. You provoke when you start a spell/spell like ability, to when it finishes.

The readied action, however, I would have given, as that would have gone as soon as the golem shifted the wall, and it would have set the initiative of your friend to right before the golem's turn.

So, in short in sounds kind of like you got to the right results, but slightly backwards in the approach.

Good gaming to you.

Ah, that clears things up a bit. Thanks.
