Levels for Shards of Sin / Shattered Star

GM Discussion

I'm looking for a lower level mod that I can run for a group this Friday. Going through the list legal for PFS, I see that, and I quote, "'Shards of Sin,' a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 1st-level characters, by Greg A. Vaughan." Now please keep in mind I'm new to running sessions, but when I read the chronicle, it's tear is listed as a 3-5. This appears to me to be a discrepancy.

I guess my query is, at what levels can I run this module?

Thanks

5/5

For PFS? Levels 3-5.

For normal home play? It starts at level 1 and takes you through level 5.

The part that's sanctioned for PFS play as a stand alone module is the latter portion of the AP book, not the entire thing. It's not an even 1/3 of the book break down, but it's pretty close to 1/2~1/3 of book 1.

For something like this, always go with the information given by the PFS specific instructions/support, rather than the general play information.

I hope this helps.

It does, thank you.

In lieu of starting a new thread for another question on a similar topic, have I overlooked a mod that would incorporate levels 2-4? Our group consists of people who have done:
Thornkeep The Forgotten Laboratory
The Midnight Mirror
Masks of the Living God
Feast of Ravenmoor

Since I'm not so adapt at navigating the product listings, did I miss a possibility? Or will I just be relegated to running a typical scenario?

Thanks again

downerbeautiful,

So, pleae walk me though this. Three of those modules are for levels 2-4. So your PCs are level 5 now? Or at least level 3?

4/5 ****

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Maybe they didn't earn full xp or are playing slow?

Actually it sounds like not everybody in the group has done everything and that he's looking for a 2-4 module other than those so that everybody can play together.

According to my spreadsheet the only 2-4 modules sanctioned for PFS are

Thornkeep: The Forgotten Laboratory
Masks of the Living God
Feast of Ravenmoor

Additionally the new We Be Goblins 2 is a 3rd level module and provides credit for PCs level 2-4.

Here is a listing by level for all PFS legal modules:

Modules:

Master of the Fallen Fortress 1
Murder's Mark 1
The Dragon's Demand 1
Crypt of the Everflame 1-2
We Be Goblins! 1-2
The Godsmouth Heresy 1-2
Thornkeep: The Accursed Halls 1-2
Thornkeep: The Forgotten Laboratory 2-4
Masks of the Living God 2-4
Feast of Ravenmoor 2-4
We Be Goblins Too! 3 (Uses Goblin Pregen, credit for 2-4)
RotR 1: Burnt Offerings 3-5
Shattered Star 1: Shards of Sin 3-5
The Midnight Mirror 3-5
Thornkeep: The Enigma Vaults 3-5
RotR 2: The Skinsaw Murders 4-6
Fangwood Keep 4-6
City of Golden Death 4-6
Carrion Hill 4-6
Dawn of the Scarlet Sun 4-6
Thornkeep: The Dark Menagerie 5-7
From Shore to Sea 5-7
Shattered Star 2: Curse of the Lady's Light 6-8
Thornkeep: Sanctum of a Lost Age 6-8
Broken Chains 6-8
Realm of the Fellnight Queen 6-8
Cult of the Ebon Destroyers 7-9
No Response from Deepmar 7-9
RotR 3: The Hook Moutain Massacre 8-10

The table would have at least the following: one character at level two, one at three, and one at four. All four of the players are between levels two and four.

I think, however, I will just run a couple scenarios and suppose that we won't power-level some characters as much as we wanted to. If I'm not mistaken, the applicable mods are covered by all four players.

Is there a reason why We Be Goblins and We Be Goblins, Too, are listed as mods when they only give three experience?

I was just trying to find a three experience thing to run as, initially, we (boyfriend and I) were waiting for our Snows of Summer compatriots to catch up to us in level, but now that they have, we want to change what character the boons go on. The question was simply to see how quickly we could power level and with what, but we're kind of SOL regarding appropriately leveled mods. Playing a pre-gen would work except for that gap between levels two and three. I'll just run one experience instead.

The four modules: Master of the Fallen Fortress, We be Goblins, We Be Goblins, too, and Dawn of the Scarlet Sun each provide 1 XP.

I just read up on that, and changed the text simultaneous to your reply.

The sanctioned section of the AP starts at level 2 part of the AP. My group averaged level 4 when we played it and we had about 8 of really boring cake walk encounters before they got the the deepest part of the dungeon. I'm firmly convinced that this AP does not work well for PFS due to level discrepancines at the higher upper levels of the dungeon crawl.

I agree with roysier.

There ae two ways to earn PFS credit for Adventure Path credit. One way is to run PFS-legal characters through the PFS-approved part of the episodes. As noted, the first parts will be very easy, and the last encounters will be very tough.

The other way is to run the entire thing as a home campaign, with whatever modifications and house rules as you please, allowing the characters to level up as appropriate, and then give the Chronicle to a PFS-legal character.

My repeated experience is that the latter is preferable.
