Caught on the edge of a web. [Rules question concerning web]

Rules Questions

The last session I ran, brought up a very interesting question that I (nor the other folks around the table) could really answer happily. The situation is like this:

  • Web is cast in a small room, so that it fills the room entirely, all characters in caught pass the initial reflex throw.
  • Only 1 player character affected, and he is at the edge of the spell(square he is in is webbed, square directly behind him is not).
  • His turn comes around, and he fails his roll to escape.
  • What happens to that player? Is he entangled in the square he started? Does he finish his move out of the web, but loses all other movement for that turn? Something else entirely?

Web text from the PRD, with the line that tangled (pun intended) us up in bold

web:
Anyone in the effect's area when the spell is cast must make a Reflex save. If this save succeeds, the creature is inside the web but is otherwise unaffected. If the save fails, the creature gains the grappled condition, but can break free by making a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as a standard action against the DC of this spell. The entire area of the web is considered difficult terrain.Anyone moving through the webs must make a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as part of their move action, with a DC equal to the spell's DC. Creatures that fail lose their movement and become grappled in the first square of webbing that they enter.

So the question comes down to: Is "moving out of a square" the same as "moving through a square" or not?

Since it says "Creatures that fail lose their movement and become grappled in the first square of webbing that they enter", he would be able to move one square anyway. And since he then is in a square not covered by the webs, he can't really be grappled by the web anymore.

I would probably say that the PC would reach the non-webbed square and lose the rest of that action's movement, but not be grappled. So he could use his standard action to move further, if desired.

Also, note that the spell only grapples; it no longer entangles as it did in 3.5.

Leaning toward the more optimal outcome for the player, I'd agree with Are - the character could move just outside the webbed area but would lose the remainder of her move action, but could still take her standard action to move further if she desired.

"If the save fails, the creature gains the grappled condition, but can break free by making a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as a standard action against the DC of this spell."

Because the PC failed their initial save, they are already grappled by the web. They have to break free by making a combat maneuver or escape artist check as a standard action before they can move. If that succeeds, I would let them move back out of the web, no further check required.

As to "moving through" I would treat it as entering a webbed square. So upon entering the web, would required a CMB/EA check to not be grappled in the first webbed square. If failed, they are grappled in that square.

@Tarantula: OP noted they succeeded on the initial saving throw.

In this scenario, it's more accurate to say that they are "moving out of" a webbed squared, which is what leads to questions. The way the spell is worded, it seems to indicate that you start to move, fail your save, get to the next square, and (operating under the assumption that said square is also webbed) wind up grappled.

Somehow I read that he failed. Ok. So if he succeeded, I think that he has to make a CMB/EA check to move through the square he is in. If he fails, he is grappled in the square he started in, and moves no spaces.

The next turn, he would have to escape, and if successful, I would let him leave his starting square "escaped" from the webbing. If he instead moved further in the webs, I would have the PC roll CMB/EA again, and if failed, would be grappled in the next square in.

Thanks for all the responses! The majority of you went with what I ultimately decided (more or less). That he was free, and lost movement (I upped it to lost all remaining actions, as I wasn't super happy with the lack of clarification). Thanks everyone!
