Animal Companions Additional list access.

Rules Questions

This question is mostly for PFS but to a lesser degree general ruling for homebrews. How does one normally gain access to the companions in the bestiaries? Is there some kind of feat? Or do you just show up with your copy of the book and whamo you get to have one off the new list? This all came about to having a ranger who is now eligible for his companion. I have a boon from a scenario that would allow him to take an axe-beak. But from looking at the additional resources all companions allowed from bestiary 1-3 is already allowed. Was there a point in society play where you were restricted from such a choice and this was a big deal, and now with revised rules not so much? Mind you I have only really been playing society play since Jan of this year. And not much longer than that for pathfinder in general.

Silver Crusade

You are normally not allowed Axe Beak as a ranger. With the sheet and the two others 3 sheets in total you can have a Axe Beak animal companion. The boon dose not affect druids at all. The boon dose affect Caviler, Paladin, Ranger, Oracle of Nature. That is off the top of my head it might affect more. Basically if you have a limited list of what you can have. Then the boon helps you.

Well that answers the question of the purpose of the boon. But still remains who has access to the extended lists in the bestiaries and who doesn't and why? And for those who don't start off with access how would they get access? Not counting a boon.

Silver Crusade

With out the boon.
Druids can access any animal companion. As long as you own a copy ot the additional resources needed.
Rangers can only pull off the ranger list.
Paladin's, Cavalier's, and Nature Oracle's can only take a horse or ridding dog ( if small).
Clerics with the nature domain get the same as Druids.
Cavalier(Huntmaster) Can only take dog or bird animal companion.
Barbarian(Mad Dog) Can only take the dog animal companion.

I think that's all of them.

Also Clerics with animal domain get animal, Clerics with scalykind domain get serpentine companion, Clerics with Saurian domain get dinosaur companion, Sorcerer with Sylvan wildbloodline get an animal companion. I don't believe there is a nature domain. Inquisitors can take one of the same domains with their one domain choice.

Where do you get this info? No where in the Ranger does it list any animals. It just says functions as druid. Which according to you would be any animal companion so long as you have the needed resource. And for Pallys it says usually horse, not has to be horse. And you speak more for society play. My questions are for both society and non-society.

The second option is to form a close bond with an animal companion. A ranger who selects an animal companion can choose from the following list: badger, bird, camel, cat (small), dire rat, dog, horse, pony, snake (viper or constrictor), or wolf.

Where does it specify that it has to be a dog? In many places of the archetype description it mentions "beast" or "animal companion" not "dog" and there is no line that states specifically what they have access to like the other restricted classes do.

So my key questions go unanswered. After rereading yet again druid and ranger stuff yes the CRB does state a limited list for rangers. But I also saw in druid "may have any companion listed in the section beginning on page 51". No where does it say anything about additional resources. So yet again how is it druids are allowed the following hypothetical of "hey guys I just bought the new bestiary 9 that just came out and my druid will now have the new lollyganger, while your ranger is stuck with the same old stupid dog". And most important WHERE IS IT WRITTEN SO I CAN READ IT FOR MYSELF/SHOW OTHERS. And the 2nd part of this is there a feat that allows anyone who would otherwise be restricted to become less and/or unrestricted. I ask cause I'm looking at a comparison to familiars. Starts off restricted, take Improved Familiar gain more options. Not to be rude but if you don't actually know and/or can't provide me with these answers don't post.

Kuthax, getting hostile toward other people who are trying to help you tends to get your post ignored, rather than answered. That said, I will try to help.

The Pathfinder Society FAQ has this to say:

Quote:

As a ranger, what list of companions can I select my animal companion from?

As a ranger, if you choose an animal companion for your hunter’s bond, you may only select one of the animals listed on page 66 of the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook. No additional companions are legal in Pathfinder Society Organized Play for Rangers except when granted from another legal source.

This has carried over to all other companion classes with a limited specific list. Basically, druids and nature domain companions are able to be pulled from any valid source, while other companions require boons to access companions that are not on their explicit list.

No one is obligated to answer your questions and getting irate isn't going to help you get your questions answered.

First off, you usually won't find any reference to additional resources in the books because it is PFS specific. Additional Resources is your main go-to to find out whether or not something is legal for PFS outside of the CRB.

It seems you found the limited list for the Ranger already. What are you asking? Do you want to know why they are different? As far as I know there is no feat to unrestrict an animal companion list but there are archetypes out there that expand certain lists.
