Ranged Attack from a Sword?

Advice

Sovereign Court

I'm curious if there is any spell, feat, class, item, etc. that will let a player cast a ranged spell from a melee weapon. I know through Magus that you can use your sword to cast touch spells, but what about range? It doesn't particularly matter what spell (damaging would be good though), and the range doesn't particularly matter. Just something beyond 5 feet range.

Any ideas, or does this not exist in any form

Sovereign Court

Also, I suppose it doesn't have to be a ranged spell from a melee weapon. It could just be ranged damage of some kind. So also, if there a way to let a melee weapon do ranged damage?

Scarab Sages

Arcane Duelist Bard can use their hand holding their bonded weapon for Somatic Components, you could fluff this at the ray being shot from the sword, but you don't get any mechanical effect for doing so.

As for using a melee weapon at range, there is the Throw Anything feat and the Throwing enchantment.

You can use the Throw Anything Feat. The only Problem is you can only use that one weapon to cast spells with. You would have to have it have the returning Property.

Well there isn't one in the Equipment guide I know of, but I'm sure you could custom make a magic weapon with an enchantment that casts scorching ray a few times a day. Then you have a flame thrower.

It could look like this (Assuming I got the pricing right):

Flamethrowing
Price: +26000 gp
Aura faint evocation; CL 3rd; Weight —
DESCRIPTION
This enchantment allows the user of the weapon to cast a scorching ray at caster level 3 from the weapon 3 times/day on command as a standard action, as per the spell. (Scorching ray is a ranged touch attack that deals 4d6 points of fire damage.)
CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS
Craft Magic Arms and Armor, scorching ray; Cost +13000 gp

Play an arcane archer and imbue your spells into your arrows?

A paladin with an oath against savagery can expend a use of their smite to get an extra 5 feet of reach on their attacks for a minute. You could possibly refluff that as some divine magical slash (the archetype is rather silent about how it really works, besides the fact that it does not stack with lunge) This also has the advantage of not actually being smite; it just uses your resources. So feel free to smack those CN heathens around.

Instead of asking this very specific question, why not ask what you are trying to accomplish. What benefit are you thinking you'll get for casting your ranged spell through a sword?

This is, in essence, exactly what I want.. unfortunately, it's a PFS character, so no custom weapons.

Good suggestion. Call me a fanboy, but I've created a PFS character based off of Inuyasha, from the Inuyasha anime. I'm having a lot of fun with him, but I began to wonder if I could in any way remotely simulate his sword attack shown here at 1:17 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFpn-3qKOR4

What about a Flame Tongue?

Aura strong evocation; CL 12th; Weight 4 lbs.; Price 20,715 gp
DESCRIPTION

This is a +1 flaming burst longsword. Once per day, the sword can blast forth a fiery ray at any target within 30 feet as a ranged touch attack. The ray deals 4d6 points of fire damage on a successful hit.
CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS

Craft Magic Arms and Armor, scorching ray and fireball, flame blade, or flame strike; Cost 10,515 gp

The easiest way would be Weaponwand, and a wand of whatever spell you want to cast.

For some reason when i read the title of this thread, i think Ballistic Knife. So a sword that shoots the blade out with a high tension spring.

Exotic light Weapon
Ballistic Sword
1d6 19-20/x2 10ft.
If proficient, the user can shoot the sword at target as a standard action. Reloading the sword with a new blade is a standard action. The Weapon can still be used as an ordinary Short Sword but ranged attacks will receive a -4 to attack.

Damn! That's a really cool spell! How the hell did i miss that?

Sovereign Court

Flametongue sounds perfect! I can't look at the Weaponwand link yet, but as soon as I get home, I will.

How about you just cast a ranged spell, and as part of the verbal/somatic components, you swing your sword and yell, "WIND SCAR!"?

That seems like the easiest way to me.

If it were me, I'd be trying to find a way to apply the same Weapon Focus, Specialization, Enhancement bonuses, etc. to both melee and ranged attacks instead of settling for a switch hitter needing to split their focus between two different weapon types.

Dip a level of Universalist Wizard and use Hand of the Apprentice to throw your weapon and have it return to your hand, fluff as firing a sword shaped energy blast?

Arcane bond a sword and use the bond's special ability to cast any range spell from your spellbook.
