Say your 3rd level with one of caster and you take...

Magical Knack

Benefit: Pick a class when you gain this trait—your caster level in that class gains a +2 trait bonus as long as this bonus doesn’t increase your caster level higher than your current Hit Dice.

What exactly does your caster class gain?

Nothing, it's for multiclassed/PrC casters.

Correct.

Now, if you were a 3rd level wizard/2nd level fighter, you would get the +2 trait bonus and have a wizard caster level of 5th. You would still only have the spells per day of a 3rd level wizard, and a maximum of 2nd level spells, but when determining the effects of those spells (Range, duration, damage, and so on) you would be considered 5th level.

If you're a multiclassed character(say fighter 2/ wizard 1 and you chose wizard for the trait) then if you took that trait, your caster level for wizard would be 3 instead of 1.

It also works for Ranger and Paladin.

It makes the Eldrich Knight pretty dang cool.
It helps the Arcane Trickster & even Arcane Archer.

I just wish you cold take it twice for the Mystic Therge.

addendum: If playing an Eldrich Knight, eventually pick up that sixth level of Wizard, you get +1 across the board for BAB & Saves.

Let me a word to the post:

Say your 3rd level with one of level caster and you take...

After seeing the first 5 people read the post wrong I can see that it could be mis-interpreted.

You would have the spells of a 1st level caster but treat the casting level of the spells as a 3rd level caster.
