Ultimate Campaign: Kingdom Building Questions

Product Discussion

A few questions I had about things that were not apparent in the book:

1) The rules state that certain terrain improvements can share a hex with other improvements. But does a settlement count as an improvement? i.e. can a farm be built on the same hex as a settlement? What about a mine or quarry?

2) If a hex is half water (a lake) and half plains then chart 4-6 says to treat it as the adjacent terrain type "for all purposes." Does that mean you can build both a farm AND a fishery there, since both can share hexes and fisheries can be built on "coastline" hexes. Likewise with river hexes. Is this why they only reduce consumption by 1 bp?

3) Combining the above two, can a coastal or river hex contain a farm, fishery, AND settlement?

4) Both highway and road have the same stats, +1/4 Economy +1/8 Stability. Are those bonuses cumulative? Meaning, does a highway actually add +1/2 Economy and +1/4 Stability? Or is the only difference in travel time?

1) Yes it can share a hex with a settlement.

2) Unclear to me, but I believe you are right in that you can have both farm and fishery in a hex that is half plains and half lake. I find it rare for hexes to half and half. They seem to try and be almost all or mostly one type of terrain. I don't think fisheries can be built in river hexes, but I could be wrong.

3) If rivers can have a fishery, then I can't see a reason why not.

4) Only a difference in travel time as far as I can tell.

I may be wrong with some of these, but won't know until proven that I am.

A fishery can be built in coastline, water, river, or marsh hex.

Well, the Canal improvement says "Settlements in a hex with a Canal", so that at least implies that a Terrain Improvement can be in the same hex as a settlement. At least the ones that say they can share a hex. Mines and quarries can't share a hex with anything else (they don't have the little star next to their name indicating so), but a farm should be able to be built in the same hex as a settlement.

Its not cumulative.

Effect: This line states the effect the terrain improvement has on that hex (or in some cases, your entire kingdom). If an improvement says you can upgrade it into another improvement, you can do so by paying the cost difference between the two improvements. When the upgrade is complete, you lose the benefit of the old improvement but gain the benefit of the new improvement.

So either the only benefit of a highway over a road is improved speeds (a highway allows normal movement speeds over all terrain but mountains, while roads only allow 3/4 speed across most terrains, according to the core rulebook), or the highways benefits should be doubled, just as the forts benefits are double the watchtowers (watchtowers can be upgraded into forts.)
