Skags?

Homebrew and House Rules

Has anyone tried to stat up skags from Borderlands? I think that could be a fun aberration for PCs to run into. Would it be an aberration because of the tentacle tongue and the triple-mandibled mouth? Or a magical beast because of the armor plating? Or just a regular animal? I'd like to use them in an upcoming campaign.

I would say some kind of magical beast. as for stats... I've got nothing at the moment. but if anybody does stat them up i might put them in the mana wastes for an up coming game of mine.

I'm going to stat them up, probably some time tomorrow. I have 8 hours to kill before class on campus so I'll give it a shot.

I would say animal. Nothing magical or special about them, but they definitely stand out as being a strange animal. They also don't seem like the strong will type to me, nor do they have an alien anatomy, and they are very mundane. 10 foot reach tongue attack like a giant toad, make an acid spitting variant, and possibly give them a few overrun feats. I don't have any stats of my own though.

Well they are covered in armor plates and have a strange trisected jaw. That's about as non-mundane as an animal can get. I'll toy around with it and post up a draft tomorrow.

Silver Crusade

I'd go animal, looking at it from a Pandoran perspective. Like how animals on other worlds can be very alien in nature but are still just animals(see the recent Triaxan bestiary in The Frozen Stars).

The "elemental-type" skags could probably be handled with templates that would apply to any other Pandoran animals, possibly making htem magical beasts.

As bizarre as they may seem from an Earth perspective, skags are still very much natural creatures. The Destroyer on the other hand...

Whatever the case, they would definitely have to be noted for frequently containing treasure, given their eating habits. ;)

(I wanna bloodwing now)

A nice bonus to Acrobatics checks made to jump is a must.

Silver Crusade

I just realized that this almost bigs for a general "Badass" template as well to really sell it. :D

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It's called the Advanced Template. ;)

Here's my first draft. I probably forgot a few things. Let me know what you think of it.

I was thinking more dire than advanced. Badass skags can be a real threat, Moe and Marley were a~+@**+s, Dukino's Mom was fun, and I really wish they would stat up Ug-Thak, Lord of Skags from Claptrap's quest.

Your link doesn't work, Borthos.

Beh. I forgot how links work on the forums. Try this
Skag

I'd just use the goblin dog. Describe it differently. Apply templates as needed (advanced for badass, advanced giant for super badass, modify fiendish to be elemental for the different elements).

Why goblin dog? They don't have super tongues or hides that survive rocket launchers, nor do those templates let you spit elemental stuffs or stomp and create waves of elemental carnage.

Because they are CR1 and skags are some of the first things you fight in borderlands? Also, same basic size, shape and attacks.

As I said, apply templates as needed. Giant increases their size which can give them reach. I said modify fiendish to go with elements instead. My suggestion would be give resistance to whatever element they are (shock for example) instead of the listed ones for fiendish. Then remove the smite/good and replace with a ranged touch element attack as appropriate.

Do you think a basic skag should be CR20 or something?

Skags are good until endgame. They level with the zones and if your on play through 2.5 they level with you.

Meh. I like creating things from the ground up. Easier to get everything right than applying templates, to me anyway. Besides it's fun. Skags are always considered a threat on Pandora, along with any other wildlife that isn't a trash feeder. So I figure just make them and modify as I need it for the campaign.
