Crane wings deflection in a grapple

Rules Questions

If a character with crane wings has the grappled condition (being grappled), can they use crane wings to deflect one melee attack per round from the grappling opponent?

Does the answer change if the grapple started with adhesive properties of a mimic?

thanks

I would argue Crane Wing can't deflect grapple attempts, either made to maintain or to initiate a grapple, because of this part of the wording of Crane Wing: "you can deflect one melee weapon attack".

The act of grappling doesn't use a weapon, not even the "unarmed strike" weapon.

You could of course deflect regular attacks made by the grappler, who might use his standard action to perform one after maintaining with a move action, if he has Greater Grapple. You could also deflect the initiating attack, if it doesn't involve a standard grapple maneuver but applies a grapple as an added effect.

The deflection effect of Crane Wing requires the character to either be fighting defensively or use the total defensive action. The character can opt to make an attack against the creature grappling it with a light or a one-handed weapon (or a natural attack or unarmed attack of course) and that can be done defensively.

However, the grapple does not require a to hit so it does not seem like your AC or Crane Wing would have an effect. It could increase your CMD so that might help you to resist becoming pinned or such, but it does not seem like you can deflect the grapple attempt either before you are grappled or after you are grappled.

I searched this forum and understand that crane wings can not deflect grapple attempts or any other maneuvers. That wasn't my question.

If the grappled opponent elects to make a melee attack vs. AC (as opposed to a grapple attempt vs. CMD) can Crane Wings deflect the attack? Yes, the character has spent a swift to activate crane style AND defensively attacked the grappled opponent.

Then yes, if it is an attack against your AC, then you may deflect it provided the other conditions that you mentioned have been met.
