Marksman build help (psionics)

Product Discussion

Hey guys my DMs next game is going to be fast forwarded to the future. Meaning Psionic classes are going to be added. I was looking at a way to make a good knife thrower, and it seems like the only 2 classes capable of that are the Soulknife and the Marksman. I feel like due to the # of feats required for a knife thrower to be viable I would need to play a Marksman. For those who are not familiar with the class it is here http://www.d20pfsrd.com/psionics-unleashed/classes/marksman#TOC-Style-Abili ty

I was thinking of plan an Elans or a Human (mainly for the extra Feat).

I was looking at stats of:
Str: 12
Dex: 14
Con: 16
Int: 12
Wis: 20 (18 + 2)
Cha: 10

GM has warrented guided to be allowed on the property so it would be a big focus. The key equipment would be a +1 Guided Starknife (eventually with Distance on it), and a Blinkback Belt with Quickdraw in order to throw it continually by drawing it into the other hand (the one way to get away with not using 2 weapons).

My main question is with what style technique to take. http://www.d20pfsrd.com/psionics-unleashed/classes/marksman/marksman-combat -styles I am pretty sure Sniper is out. It would be either Finesse or Volley. I am thinking Volley might be smarter for the bonus to perception/extra knife to throw. My next question regarding the character is what order to take feats. We are starting at 3rd Level meaning I have access to 2 Feats + Psionic Talent (or 3 Feats if Human). The problem is that the characters are so feat intensive it is hard to determine which is most important.

Here is what I have come up with, but I need some more thoughts on optimizing it.

Feats:
Race: Psionic Talent/Bonus Feat
1 - Two Weapon Fighting
Class - Point Blank Shot
3 - Quickdraw (This is where I would start)
5 - Rapidshot
Bonus (5) - Precise Shot
7 - Improved Two Weapon Fighting
Bonus (8) - Deadly Aim
9 - ??
11 - Greater Two Weapon Fighting
Bonus (11) - Weapon Focus (Starknife)
13 - Improved Precise Shot
Bonus (14) - ??
15 - ??
17 - ??
Bonus (17) - ??
19 - ??
Bonus (20) - ??

For my two traits, I was just thinking of making the character worship Irori and taking 2x Wisdom to Flesh traits. 1 for Stealth and the other for Acrobatics.

Also looking at making it the Shroud Archtype!

Trying to make a thrower work seems like it is going to be extremely hard to play at low levels. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Why is your Wis so high? Your attack roll is going to suffer. I know you get more power points but as a damage thrower this ain't helping you none.

You've also skipped over Deadly throw, which is Dex to damage, probably something you should not skip out on. I would suggest Chakram and Returning Throw (this is exactly like blinkback). This way you don't need two weapon fighting, instead you can just use rapid shot as Chakram is a ranged weapon. Only thing when you start getting muiltple attacks you need returning or teleporting on the weapon for returning throw to work.

You can also get twin throw later but at that point you need to retake two weapon fighting (It's multishot but for thrown weapons.)

I will say though a thrower is really hard and feat intensive to build compared to normal bow wielder. Considering we don't have to jump throw all these hoops to get the weapon back into your hand.

I didnt know Deadly Throw and Twin Throw existed. The reason my Wisdom is as high as it is, is because guided property uses Wisdom to hit and Damage. I dont know where I would get them added in here though if I switch over to Dex based instead. I guess one would have to be at level 9 and the other 13/15?

I want to be a thrower though. Chakram is ammunition and is only usable once. Where as Starknife I can continue to reuse. Also Returning Throw is a terrible feat. Blinkback puts the item back on your belt that turn. This means I only ever need 1 weapon for both hands. Returning Throw Means I need like 7 weapons. I dont feel like paying for upgrading 7 weapons.

Erm.. Did you read this bit of returning throw.. you know.. the good bit?

If the weapon (or shield) being thrown has the ranged, returning, or teleporting special ability, your attacks are treated as if you had expended psionic focus to power this feat.

> You may expend your psionic focus as part of a thrown attack to make the weapon you throw return to your hand immediately after any thrown attack resolves. This effect lasts until the end of your turn, allowing you to attack multiple times with the same thrown weapon if multiple attacks are otherwise available.

So 7 weapons? You only need 1. Though anyway yes you can use Starknifes though I was pretty sure you could put returning on a Chakram. If you don't use returning or teleporting weapon and instead use guided I would continue going on what you are doing. To be honest though since most of your powers don't incur a save the wisdom is only giving you bonus power points so if you use lots of powers that's great. If not it isn't helping you much, you need wis 14 for most of your powers. Also remember a Marksman must still qualify for his bonus feats unlike the ranger that does not. So you need a high dex anyway to get your two-weapon fighting feats the way you are going.

You make a number of good points sir!

So maybe I should Switch it to:

Str: 12
Dex: 20 (18 + 2)
Con: 14
Int: 12
Wis: 16
Cha: 10

Feats:
Race: Psionic Talent/Bonus Feat
1 - Two Weapon Fighting
Class - Point Blank Shot
3 - Quickdraw (This is where I would start)
5 - Rapidshot
Bonus (5) - Precise Shot
7 - Improved Two Weapon Fighting
Bonus (8) - Deadly Aim
9 - Twin Throw
11 - Greater Two Weapon Fighting
Bonus (11) - Weapon Focus (Starknife)
13 - Improved Precise Shot
Bonus (14) - ??
15 - ??
17 - ??
Bonus (17) - ??
19 - ??
Bonus (20) - ??

Also isnt Deadly Throw completely negated by the Agile property? I would much rather have the Agile property and the Blinkback belt then having returning Throw and deadly throw. This way I can maintain my focus in order to use Wind Reader. ^^ Also in the off chance this works it might be worth it. Can Returning Throw and Wind Reader both be activated in the same turn? Assuming it doesn't work then Wind Reader > Returning Throw when you have the blinkback belt.

apparently he siad I have to use these things called Vibroknives, must be a weapon he made up for the future game.

Wind reader is terrible later on, you'll eventually outclass it. Switch out for Shroud. The bonus to hit you gain from wind reader is the same type of bonus as your chosen weapon class from marksman so they don't stack.

Returning throw if used with the magic items yes, as you do it 'as if' you had expended it. Then you can spend it on wind reader.

Are you planning to hit things in melee? Agile, Weapon finesse and all that only apply to melee attacks as far as I know. I can't find an answer online so I guess it's up to your DM on that one. If it does apply then yea Agile is better since you don't have to spend a feat on it. Just remember to pick up metaphysical weapon.

I'm not too sure on guided now that I think about it. Guided replaces Str for attack and damage doesn't it? Well you use dex to hit with thrown right? So not sure if that would work. So it might work only for damage. That's a side tangent now anyway.

Isn't there a 3rd party forum?

Its an advice forum. Go troll elsewhere [hehe]

Also @ Davachido, doing Agile property turns str damage into dex damageon melee weapons. For the purposes of a thrown weapon, its still considered a melee weapon even though it uses some ranged feats. So Dex would apply when thrown. This is the reason I dont want Weapon Finesse, is I only plan on throwing my daggers, I never plan on attacking with them in melee.

I don't see anywhere in the rules that say that they do but okay. Regardless other things to consider is using Snap shot, improved snap shot and cluster shot later on. (Also if you are going human pick up precise shot earlier, that -4 will hurt you a lot)

I agree it will hurt me alot but the first Feats from 1-3 are the ones I need first and foremost :(.
