[Legendary Games] New Product Time! Beasts of Legend: Coldwood Codex

Product Discussion

Let's have a big welcoming round of applause for the man, the myth, the legend, Tim Hitchcock, with his very first product for Legendary Games!

Tim and I have teamed up to produce a terrific new monster supplement for Legendary Games, following in the foosteps of the terrifying Construct Codex, with fabulous artwork by Jason Juta, Tanyaporn Sangsnit, and newcomer Steve Wood, some of which we've previewed already. This product focuses on the fey and the undead, with richly detailed multipage spreads for each monster packed wall to wall with the kind of lore and attention to every aspect of each monster's personality, ecology, and society that you would expect in an AP Bestiary, if not more.

In addition, on top of incredibly inventive monster crunch and fluff, amazing illustrations, and of course robust hyperlinking, the Coldwood Codex also includes 3 pages of full-color foldable paper minis, allowing you to print and unleash them on your PCs in delightful and deadly living (or unliving, as the case may be) color!

Available now exclusively for advance purchase directly from Legendary Games, and available later this week in wide release including right here at Paizo.com!

Downloaded and browsed through the PDF. A very decent collection of critter in this one. I hope to dive into the nitty gritty details after tonight's Carrion Crown session.

One thing I'm not seeing in the product is Knowledge check tables for each monster. Would it be possible to include such tables in similar future releases?

Pathfinder has sort of gone away from specific Knowledge check tables for each creature and it's shifted to a standardized check DC of 10 + CR. That mostly deals with learning its special abilities, though; if we're talking about just regular creature lore, I can still see the use for it.

I'll talk with Tim Hitchcock and see if he has any objection to adding that in for each of his creatures. I'm think we could probably add that to our next monster product... which might be coming along sooner than you think. :)

I mention it mostly because the Monster Focus series from Minotaur Games do feature such tables with various information depending on which DC the character beats, and I think it's a nice feature. I could certainly wing it, but I kind of like the inclusion of such tables in the monster writeups.

I'd like to get a copy of this; sadly every link to the Legendary Games site says that it's currently unavailable. The site, that is.

Yep, same here. My son has been laughing his head off at my obssession at the moment, which is that I'm salivating over the Legendary Games site, waiting for "Conquering Heroes" to be released, checking the site a couple of times per day.

Now the site is down, and he thinks I'm going to have a stroke or something...:)

No problem - I just forgot to renew my Hostmonster monthly payment. I just did and it's up now, but you can't actually order it through the site. Wordpress has a limit of 10 MB for file uploads, and this product is over that limit (one of a number of reasons that I'll be migrating our webpage to a new hosting service next month when I have more time after our school lets out for summer).

In any case, the site is back up now, with instructions for direct email ordering through our company email at makeyourgamelegendary@gmail.com, using the same email address as the payee email in Paypal.

I look forward to your orders and am delighted that you are excited to get on board and get your copy today!

Awesome...done.
PayPal payment winging it's way to you, Jason, as we speak. :)

Product on its way to YOU!

Payment sent!

(I was going to ask about the possibility of adding pawn pics to your PDFs, but it seems you're way ahead of me. :) )

We do try to think ahead! SENT!

And received, thanks!

*pore pore pore*

That's not what I think of when the term "amadan" comes up, but it's pretty cool. And paranoia-inducing if it feels like just cursing one guy and then hanging around invisible to everyone else.

The Bokereyder is a fey, but is "sometimes mistaken for fey?" I'm confused.

Is there a Bielebog?

Undead linnorm? Wait, no, tatzlwyrm. And now I wonder if the Faleich-Mar ever tried linnorms.

Jenny Greenteeth! Without being a hag.

...A druidic lich? Sweet!

AAAAH SCARY MASK

Questioning the metaphysics of fey who appear to have been native to the First World having souls to be trapped as undead, but that rotting pixie is so cool I'll give it a pass.

Barrow-wight: quite creepy, in keeping with the spirit of the Tolkien version while being its own thing. Better than the random thug that is Standard D&D Wight.

Undead ambush predator! Think you're about to loot a corpse? BOOM!

p. 35: "...vulnerable to affects that specifically affect..." first affect should be effect.

All very cool stuff, kudos and thanks to you all!

After pondering the layout some more, I've distilled my unease down to two factors: I don't like double line spacing, and the font you're using does not scale well and appears jagged at almost any size. The Carrion Crown layout is much better on both counts. (Honestly, double spacing gives the impression of an attempt to pad page count, which is weird and obviously untrue considering this isn't a print product.)

Hi EML -

Thanks for the feedback. I think the first draft of the bokereyder was a monstrous humanoid, so that sentence probably is an artifact that slipped through. I'll clean that up and a few typos (like the a/effect).

As for the font, it looks smooth and well-rounded on my computer (standard HP Pavilion laptop with HD screen); I'm not sure why it looks jagged on your display. I'm not particularly tech-savvy when it comes to diagnosing that kind of problem, but I can ask Liz to investigate other options for future products. I'd be interested to know:

QUICK QUESTION #1: Is anyone else having trouble with the fonts in the Kingbreaker AP Plug-Ins looking jagged or having trouble scaling?

As for the spacing issues, Liz was experimenting with a different visual style, and one that might have been a bit more readable than the very compact text columns she was using on the Gothic product line. I've always had 20/20 vision so reading small print has never been a problem personally, but electronic-only products can strain the eyes a bit so I thought maybe increasing the point size and white space might make for a more pleasant reading experience. I'd also be interested to know:

QUICK QUESTION #2: Do people prefer the more open layout style of the Kingbreaker AP Plug-Ins, or would they prefer a return to a more tightly packed text columns with a smaller point size, as with the Gothic and Far East AP Plug-Ins?

I'll post both questions up on our Facebook page for comments as well and we'll see what the fandom thinks. Thanks for bringing your thoughts to my attention and for your enthusiastic support of Legendary Games!

Odd, we appear to be using pretty much the same display as well. *shrug* Maybe it's just psychological on my part?

Or maybe it's all just a fey illusion playing tricks with your eyes to drive you mad, Mad, MAD! ;-)

...Is the weirdstone intended to weigh ten times as much as the heaviest kinds of rock in the real world, or is that an error?

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2008 Top 4; Contributor; Publisher, Legendary Games

That'd be a Tim question; that was one of his monsters so I can't say what is intention was in creating it that way.

My answer: Sure, why not? IT'S MAGIC! :)

Just got it and I love it.

One question: the Amadan (very neat critter!) can only be seen by people under the effects of a curse. Does this mean that if you're playing an oracle (seeing as how they all have a curse on them), that he can see the monster?

Of course, if true, that can lead to some amusement as the 'crazy oracle' tries to convince everyone that the reason why everyone's going blind/insane/lame isn't because of his magic, but because of the little weeping, blood-stained bag of... something, slithering around town.

Just as an aside...do we have an idea yet of when "Conquering Heroes" will be available? I was hoping to use it this weekend...

Clearly, it won't be this weekend.

However, I can tell you it's in the layout stage. Liz and I have been working through some tweaks and what-not. There's also an opportunity to add a bit more text to stretch some of the character write-ups so they fill all three pages devoted to each one...i.e., there's always a bit of "empty" space on that last page that annoys me. So, I'd like to fill that up with further content, if possible. Noting major. Just a couple hundred words here or there...enough to basically add another rolepaying tip or bit of description or background enhancement.

At the moment, Liz has already laid out the first four (i.e., half) of the pregen PCs. But I believe she's scheduled to go on vacation next week. So, she may not be able to address any further tweaks I make to the text until she returns. If she can finish the initial layout of the remaining PCs before she leaves...and give me an idea of how much "empty" space remains for each PC...that would give me all the information I need to square away any further work effort on my part. And that means we'd have a solid chance at finishing up very quickly after she got back.

My two cents,
--Neil

No worries, Neil. Thanks for getting back to me so fast.
I'll settle for adding the Beasts of Legend into Hero Lab this weekend, instead. :)

Yep, oracles can see them. Fat lotta good it'll do em. :)

Ha! Brilliant. All part of the job of being the resident loon in the party.

Just got the reformatted edition. This is much easier on the eyes, thank you Liz!

...Dare I ask if it might be possible to do the same for Cold Mountain?

We will see. There is a large group of new products coming together all at the same time, and when layout resources are limited we may not have time to go back and fix it up for a while. When and if we do, though, we will send it directly to people who have bought it directly from Legendary Games, and we'll post it up for re-download on Paizo and our other sales sites.
