Swim speed questions

Rules Questions

"A creature with a swim speed can move through
water at its indicated speed without making Swim checks.
It gains a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform a
special action or avoid a hazard."

What is a special action? i always thought they just got a +8 to swim but it looks like i am wrong

and

"You can’t take 10 on a Swim check in stormy water, even
if you aren’t otherwise being threatened or distracted."

"The creature can always
choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or
endangered when swimming."

so can a creature with a swim speed take a 10 even in stormy water?

ok, i think the second question is unneeded because creatures with a swim speed don't need to make checks.

This is not true. There are certain situations were a character with a Swim Speed will still need to make Swim Checks.

For example, a character with a Swim Speed in a river moving faster than 60 feet per round will still need to make a DC 20 Swim Check and they can take 10 on it and they get +8 bonus so if through ranks or strength thyey can get the other 2 points, it won't be an issue usually.

There is also nothing that exempts them from the DC 20 check to avoid the nonlethal damage from fatigue. What they can do is to move in water without having to make a Swim Check and they do not suffer the quarter or half movement penalties than thos who just make a Swim Check do.

Also, the question about taking 10 is an example of a specific rule trumping a general rule. So, they can "always" take 10 even in Stormy Water.

thanks, i knew one trumped the other
