In PFS, are an Animal Companion or Eidolon's HP max at first level or half+1 like a monster?

Not sure about eidolons, but animal companions are 4.5 per hit die, rounded down after you add them all up, recalculated every level.

Its done as an average of the dice, round down.

A starting animal companion will have 4.5 + 4.5= 9 plus con mods for both hit dice plus toughness if any (which i highly recommend for critters)

A starting eidolon will have 5.5= 5 hp +con mods + toughness.

How do I determine hit points for my animal companion?

Animal companions receive average hit points per hit die. For d8, the average is 4.5. Multiply 4.5 times the number of hit dice your animal companion has and round down. Recalculate hit points for your companion each time it gains additional hit dice. After its hit points are calculated, add in appropriate bonuses from its Constitution modifier, feats, and so on.

Oof, 4 HP plus Con at first level for Animal Companions? Now I see one reason I've never encountered a Druid in PFS.

Thanks for the info!

Animal companions start with two hd though. a critter with a decent con can have (4.5+2 +4.5 +2) 13 hp, about what the front liners are packing.

Its a shame. I've found druids amazing for organized play. Decent skills, decent skill points, and wildshape is the tool box that keeps on giving.

This. My level 11 druid spends most of his wildshapes per day to scout or provide transportation for the rest of the party. We have a running gag about the Hippo Express at this point. (They currently have routes across Varisia and the Lands of the Linnorm Kings.)

The druid spell list is also pleasantly flexible. And animal companions can be pretty awesome, if for nothing more than bringing another body to the party (if you don't go for the animal companion, you can make up for it with summon nature's ally to some extent). Either you're bringing two melee fighters in, a melee fighter and a great versatile caster, or something in between. Yes, you're going to end up with a dead animal companion now and then (my druid's been through five dogs, but has so far not managed to get his first liger killed despite some close calls) but in my experience they can manage very well despite lagging a bit in HP on some levels.
