How to Ask a Player to Leave your Game?

Advice

I have a crowded game of 6 people. Several people have expressed an interest in playing but I cap my games at 6. I have a player who is a good friend of mine but they don't seem too interested as they only show up 50% of the time.

I was wondering if any of you had a similar experience and had any advice?

I want to talk to said player and ask him if he would like to bow out of the game but I am unsure on how to go about it. I don't want to hurt their feelings but at the same time I want to have interested players who want to be there.

Any thoughts or advice on the matter are appreciated.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"Hey man, look. If you're gonna flake out half the time I'm gonna have to ask you to leave. Sorry. If you think you can make it more often, cool. If not, you're kinda dragging everyone else' fun down a bit."

Rynjin pretty much nails it. Be honest, try and work with the friend if he still says he wants to play. Establish measurable expectations like making 3 out of 4 games or 4 out of 5 games vs half of them if that is what it takes.

Do it in person and not through email, text, or phone.

"We're pretty committed to the game, and I've noticed you can only make it about half the time. Maybe you'd rather be in a more casual game?"

Pretty much what everyone else said. If you have someone who can commit to every game, let him know that there are other gamers interested in the game and that if he can't commit there are others who can.

You should also let him know that this isn't a reflection on him as a person or friend. The game just isn't a good fit for him.
