Low tier GM credits, high level characters

GM Discussion

2/5

Hi all,

I apologize if this is covered somewhere, but I haven't been able to turn up the answer. I read an old thread about applying a GM credit to a character that depends on the character's level. The example given was applying a GM'd 4-5 game, but applying it to a lvl 1 character, which would be applied to the characters as 1-2 (please correct me if this is wrong). What I couldn't answer was: is the opposite true? I just GM'd a 1-2 scenario. If I applied it to my lvl 5 wizard, would I use tier 1-2, or tier 4-5?

(The cert is already applied, I'm asking for future reference.)

Thanks!

You can apply a GM chronicle to any of your characters who could legally play the scenario. The rewards your character collects are based on the character's level regardless of the subtier you GM. If it's a Tier 1-5 scenario, and you apply the chronicle to a 4-5th level character, you apply the subtier 4-5 rewards to that character. If it's a 1-3 level character you apply the subtier 1-2 reward (tweeners get the lesser reward).

You may also hold a GM Chronicle for a character below the Tier of a mid/high Tier adventure. For example, your PC is level 4. You run a Tier 5-9 adventure. When you report the table, you report which character is getting the credit, but you hold the Chronicle sheet until the character reaches level 5.

You must choose which character is getting the credit when you report the table.

Also, if you are building a character through GM credit, you may not add Chronicles from a low-tier adventure, if the character is already above the Tier of the adventure. For example, if your PC is level 6 (even if you have not actually built and played the character yet), you may not apply the Chronicle from a Tier 1-5 adventure to that character.

A GM credit character might not have stats, classes, or even a race yet, but when a Chronicle is added to that Character's stack it gets the XP, PP, and gold along with item access.

The easiest way to sort this out is to remember that the subtier at which you ran the game is irrelevant to your GM credit.

Thanks everyone! I didn't apply to T1-2 cert to my lvl 5 because I didn't want him to be behind on gold. Good to know I can use some GM credit to catch up with the higher-levels at our group.

Don, am I understanding you when you say you can build a character up to almost any level before actually building them? Seems like a possible (if labor-intensive) way of have a "backup" of your high-lvl character, in case of death without possibility of resurrection.

To Don again: would I be correct in stating that, if the GM credit character has been built and played at least once, you can apply credit from a lower tier adventure (i.e. T1-5 to a lvl 6). Or does the character need to actually play the scenario to play down into the tier?

Thanks for for being so helpful! I'm sure this has been asked before.

As long as you have not played your GM credit PC, you can "rebuild" it until it is played at 2nd level or higher for the first time.

You can only apply credit to a PC, GM credit PC or otherwise, for games which would be either legal for the PC to have played, or as pending credits for when the PC reaches the lowest level the game could be played at.

That is, you can apply Tier 1-5 credit, only to a PC in the level range frmo 1st to 5th. If the PC is 6th level or higher, you cannot apply a Tier 1-5 credit to it.

Would a 6th level character be allowed to play a 4-5 tier game? Or is the restriction you mention only for GM certs?

Shadow Lodge 2/5

A level 6 character can never play in a 4-5 subtier game, because that only exists in the Tier 1-5 scenarios. Your character can only play in a tier if his level falls within the tier's levels.
